From coop to egg. My Rescued Hen story. 3 Ex commercial hens get to retire in my garden.
From coop to egg. As a complete beginner with ZERO experience of keeping chickens, my diary of starting to actually getting egg(s) from 3 rescued ex "battery" hens. 90% of the time was spent making the coop clean and draught proof. The chickens pretty much take care of themselves. Very placid birds. On the first night they couldn't work out they were to sleep in the coop. So i, as a 20 stone bloke, had to crawl in on all fours and pick them up and "guide" them into the coop via the dropping door.
So by 8pm they were all shut up in the coop. Now Sunday morning, so 12 hours have passed, i open the door and within 5 minutes they're out. I pop out for a couple of hours and upon my return find a large brown egg in the nesting box. I am elated. An hour later, another, somewhat malformed, egg and not 10 mins later, another malformed egg. Not worried, its normal for stressed birds to lay odd eggs for a few days until they settle in.
They are around 18 months old and are rescued hens. I was told they are from Dorset and come from an organic farm I don't know what breed but likely ISA Brown.
Sunday night, 19:10 and i've just watched them waddle up the stairs to their coop with no help from me. Mission accomplished.
Now, 48 hours later i have 6 eggs, 4 good and 2 wobbly.
