Severe infections can cause permanent hair loss and scarring. Cause of folliculitis In general, folliculitis is caused when a hair follicle is inflamed (swollen) and infected. Folliculitis is most often caused by an infection of hair follicles with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Folliculitis may also be caused by viruses, fungi and even an inflammation from ingrown hairs. There are certain factors that can increase your risk of developing folliculitis. A few risks can include: If you shave often. If you have been using an oral antibiotic for a long period of time. If you are overweight or obese. If you have a history of diabetes. If you do activities that make you sweat a lot and don’t fully clean off afterwards. If you spend time in a hot tub or sauna that isn’t properly cleaned. Types of folliculitis There are two primary types of folliculitis. Superficial folliculitis is when only part of the follicle is damaged, while deep folliculitis is when the whole follicle is damaged. The main types of superficial folliculitis are: Bacterial folliculitis. Hot tub folliculitis, also known as pseudomonas folliculitis. Razor bumps also known as pseudofolliculitis barbae. Pityrosporum folliculitis Types of deep folliculitis include: Sycosis barbae. Gram-negative folliculitis. Boils and carbuncles. Eosinophilic folliculitis. Symptoms of folliculitis.
