In this video, I’ll be talking about some incremental changes and updates to the design of my 1-pound antweight combat robot Mini Mulcher. I also want to talk about good strategies for testing and iterating on robot designs. I’ll be talking through my thought process for each change.
3D printing makes this whole process a lot faster and easier, but the same process applies to any robot, not just mostly printed ones! Iterating can be done with metal and plastic alike. And testing is universal.

Today's video is all about competing with at Battlebots, during the filming of the 2020 Season 5 tournament. With all the crazy stuff going on this year it was lucky we got a chance to compete at all, as Battlebots pushed the tournament back several times and seemed on the verge of cancellation until it was finally confirmed. All together, around 60 teams from all over the country, and even a few international teams were able to attend and compete to be crowned the world champion.
That said, I'm sure many fans of the show are wondering what exactly it was like to compete during a global pandemic, and how was such a large film production put together? Well, watch and find out!
This was an amazing experience and a ton of fun, stress and excitement, and a huge amount of hard work for everybody on the team. I really hope to do it again next year. We want Season 6!

Trying out a few new upgrades and finding problems to solve along the way!
Division is my 3-pound Beetleweight combat robot, slated to compete in the July 24th Norwalk Havoc competition in Norwalk, Connecticut. Division spins a nearly 10-oz AR500 steel blade that is 7.5 inches in diameter at up to nearly 12000 RPM resulting in tip speeds approaching 235 miles per hour. With over a kilowatt of weapon motor power, the bot can get itself out of most sticky situations using the gyroscopic acceleration forces of the weapon or the sheer torque of its weapon motor. Division is my 3lb Beetleweight combat robot and has been in the works for months now, with each version getting better and better. Division did very well and has proven to be not only a heavy hitter, but surprisingly reliable as well now. The weapon is no longer the main point of failure! This footage was provided by the wonderful SWORD club at the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA, where this competition was held. All footage was recorded on November 6th, 2021 during the semi-annual SWORD combat robotics competition. The robots competing here were either 1lb Antweights or 3lb Beetleweights. All Beetleweight fights were 3 minutes in length but Antweight fights were 2 minutes in length.
Antweights were a double elimination bracket- lose twice and you're out.
Beetleweights are hard to explain. Each robot got to fight in three 3-way battles, and based on their performance, the top 12 robots were seeded into a single-elimination final for the event winner title. Just 'Cuz Robotics Website: https://justcuzrobotics.com/
