Today I refer the Neewer NW-8000; a great budget condenser microphone. However, I only suggest this microphone if you are going to be connecting it to your computer using a USB Audio Interface that offers Phantom Power.

Today I review the Audio-Technica AT4040, a large diaphragm XLR condenser mic. This thing has a relatively neutral frequency response up through 2kHz where you start to see contouring leading to a boosted presence and air boost with a cut around 9kHz. Overall this thing has a pronounced proximity effect, but at a 3-6 inches you’ll find a smooth frequency response with nice boosted high frequencies without any stand out harsh frequencies except for the occasional sibilance.

WARNING: I no longer recommend using a USB soundcard to connect a microphone to your computer. It has become too unreliable due to manufacturers altering the components used in their products as well as alterations to operating systems causing additional problems. The only method of connecting a microphone to your computer that I recommend is with a USB AUDIO INTERFACE that is designed specifically for that use case.

Today I review an iPhone microphone, the iRig Mic Studio, which is an iOS / Android / Mac / Windows compatible microphone. This mic provides clarity that is almost too much, due to the overly boosted high end, causing it to sound slightly unnatural. It records 24-bit 48kHz which is nice, and it does a decent job at rejecting plosives.

Today I review the Mackie EM-USB, a new USB Condenser Microphone. This mic offers a more neutral sound compared to most other affordable USB microphones. One huge draw back is the fact that it does not have zero latency monitoring and no metering. I also compare it to the Rode NT-USB Mini, the Blue Yeti Nano, and the Blue Yeti.

Today I review the USB Version of the SM7b, kind of…the MV7. This is a USB microphone which also has an XLR output which can be run simultaneously. It has basic DSP processing as well. If you’re looking for a USB Dynamic mic and $250 is your budget, I think it can sound great, and has some backup functionality via the XLR output if you run it to an external recorder. Also, the microphone is made in China.
