Sometimes You Need A Break - Running Away To Sky Meadows
It's almost Christmas and this time of year I usually wind down quite a bit and try to spend a little more time on me stuff. So I went to my favorite patch of woods, Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia.
If I'm going to maintain my sanity, I need plenty of time outdoors in nature. Sky Meadows State Park is close enough to me that I can get there almost any time I need a break. I really think we all need this time in nature. Even massive cities tend to have large parks available.
About This Video: In this vlog Benjamyn Smith, Doctor Ben, goes hiking at Sky Meadows State Park in Virginia. He talks about the importance of taking regular breaks from you life and to focus on yourself once in a while. He spends time on the Appalachian Trail walking around the wilderness.

I have to confess... I've pretty much exclusively minimalist footwear for around 10 years now. I recently took a job with horses and bought a new pair of cowboy boots. After two weeks of my body throwing tantrums about the unnatural, and no longer usual, posture... I'm having a bit of a love obsession with my cowboy boots.
This isn't my first pair by any stretch. I've owned many. But there's something just fun, cool, and stylish about cowboy boots. It's one of the struggles we face when moving to minimalist footwear. There just isn't a minimalist cowboy boot!

Deadlifts are a great exercise! And what makes them even better is that there are many ways to tweak them to focus on specific things. Today we're going to be exploring a deadlift variation. The staggered deadlift! This is an asymmetrical movement that allows you to put more stress on one leg over the other. It's a great option to address muscle imbalances or to use as a stepping stone for single-leg deadlifts.

Who want's to roast another sacred cow? Let's talk about your 1 rep max. The truth is, for most part your one rep max doesn't matter. Testing your 1RM is a pretty standard part of conventional strength training.
It makes sense if you're a competitive lifter but it's really not that important if you're just trying to be healthy or get into better shape. It's so dependent on so many variables that it just doesn't translate well to real life.
One rep max testing is very specific to the gym environment. There are a number of problems with it as a benchmark for fitness. I'll cover the three major issues as well as the good points of the one rep max, because hey! There's always some positive!

Hey everyone! Doctor Ben, not a real doctor here! Today I'm going to cover how having tight hips can lead to lower back pain. The body is a pretty complicated thing and one lever not able to do it's job means all the other ones have to work a little harder.
I'm going to use walking as an example. If your hip isn't able to extend far enough behind you, then either your gait changes and your don't walk correctly. Or your spine flexes to make up for the lack of flexibility in your hips.
Over time this extra spine flexing will lead to overused lower back muscles and extra wear and tear on your spine joints. You need to restore mobility and strength to your hips and retrain your body to do the movement, in this case walking, correctly.

I'm finally doing it! I've wanted to for a long time. I'm doing the Wim Hof 10 week course! I want to share the experience though. So here's day 1 of the Wim Hof 10-week course! I have tons of experience in cold water so I'm really excited to see how cold water after the breathing exercises compares to what I'm used to.
My normal experience with cold water is you just have to suck it up and eventually your body mostly adjusts. To make this course extra exciting, I've just moved to Colorado so I'm kicking this off in the wintertime in the mountains. I'm expecting the first cold shower to be shockingly cold!
If you're interested in the Wim Hof method or his online courses this is only the first video over the length of this 10-week course. I'll share the whole experience as I go along. I'm sure there will be some laughs, but I hope it helps you decide if the Wim Hof 10 week course is right for you or not!

Let's talk shoulder mobility! This is an external shoulder rotation stretch to help restore normal position to your shoulders. So many of us have internally rotated shoulders and a tight chest. This stretch is a great way to reverse that position and help your shoulders be healthier and injury-free!
