Thanks to one of our resident Whitetail bucks and his reactions, we found evidence that someone was prowling around our property last month at 5 a.m., INSIDE the perimeter fence. This three photo series shows how he reacts to a bright light suddenly popping on. More security ordered. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTFfld20D_Y
***All information verified by veterinarians I know personally who have avian experience, however any research at all will reveal to you that most respiratory disease in avians is not permanently curable. Avians are not mammals. Check the Merck Veterinary Manual if you have doubts***
Overuse of antibiotics is a real issue. The FDA/USDA has pulled all water soluble animal antibiotics off the shelves, crippling the small farmer who truly needs them for his/her livestock, though really, it's all about government control, not help-Control the food supply, control the people. Yet, it is a fact that antibiotics are very much overused in backyard flocks today in a "shotgun" approach. Most have zero idea if the chicken has a bacterial or viral infection and throw antibiotics at the bird anyway. Antibiotics will not treat viruses, as you should know. Never treat an illness in your flock that you know or suspect is contagious. Antibiotics do not cure, they only control symptoms. Diseases like Mycoplasmosis or Coryza create permanent carriers. And a carrier bird can infect others, even when they are not currently showing symptoms. Is your entire flock worth the life of only one chicken? Of course not. This is a harsh reality of the hobby that you need to be prepared for, folks. If you can't hack it, you'll end up treating and treating and re-treating and the joy of owning chickens will be diminished. Natural remedies won't fix those diseases, either, though they have their place in alleviating symptoms. They do not cure these diseases any more than the antibiotics will.
All that said, I do understand someone who has two or three hens and wants to treat those, no plans to get more until those have passed away. But, for those of us who sell chicks and hatching eggs, we cannot afford to cause someone else heartache by allowing that carrier bird to go to another home and spread disease to another flock. Please be conscientious and practice biosecurity-the best thing to do is to keep disease OUT in the first place!

You must ask and answer this question for yourself, and NOW, decide where your line in the sand is and who will be on your side of it when the country completely disintegrates into chaos and, possibly, famine. The notion advanced by some folks that if you have any disease at all in your flock, it is YOUR fault due to an improper management style, is frankly, chicken poop. Even perfectly managed flocks can encounter disease, contagious or not, because no one can see a germ and many terminal reproductive ailments are genetic/hormone-based illnesses such as internal laying and reproductive cancer. Practice good biosecurity and build strong immune systems with proper nutrition and proper environment and you've done all you can to prevent disease.

Someone asked me about Atlas, if he was okay, so I did a quick video showing my sweet old guy. He's ratty and arthritic, but he's still the senior large fowl rooster here and is dedicated to his job. He has already outlived several of his hens and has only two older ones left.

Her older brother Piglet passed away a week ago. Chicks afflicted with thyrogenous dwarfism do not live to maturity. It is caused by a recessive gene that must be passed from both parents, or have two copies for the trait to express, i.e., make a dwarf (one bird can carry two copies of this gene by itself, but it is rare).
