To get to the core of Critical Theory, we need to look at the origins of Critical Theory emerging from Marxism in the early 20th century Germany and the US. We will start by examining two just-so stories about critical theory and then compare this to a history of the Frankfurt school's beginning. Thanks foes out to Shalon Van Tine for the four horsemen phrase and Martin Jay, Susan Buck-Morass, Rolf Wiggershaus, Stephen Bonner, Mathias Rothe, Bastion Ronge, and Rick Kuhn for the bulk of the material used for reference.

Zero Books Manifesto:
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.
Zero Books aims to work against this trend.

This video continues an exploration of Corneilius Castoriadis’ book “The Imaginary Institution of Society.” Specifically. we consider his objection to Marx’s understanding of historical materialism and historical change and attempt to defend Marx’s Hegelianism from Castoriadis’ criticisms. Could a dialectical approach to historical change makes sense and if it can make sense of the struggle for socialism. Along the way, we’ll paraphrase Mark Fisher’s “Ghosts of My Life.”

Ben Burgis returns in order to give the reactionary youtuber “The Distributist” an argument. Specifically, Ben contends that the word “capitalism” is not magical, that the idea that there are “magic words” that shut down thought because they’re inadequately defined is dubious given how difficult philosophers have found the task of adequately defining simple words such as “table” or “chair” to be, and moves on from there to discuss the continuum fallacy.
This is part one of a two-part video series. The second half of this video will be coming soon.
