Most traditional, indigenous cultures are taught to care for new mamas and bring healing to their communities.
The innate understanding of a new mother’s vulnerability is an essential part of her transformation from maidenhood to motherhood.
The Closing of the Bones ceremony acknowledges the immense changes a woman has undergone in pregnancy and childbirth and assists in bringing her spirit back into her own body. Physically, it guides her bones back into place, helps her pelvic organs shift and her uterus to shrink back down, and stimulates blood flow. Women who are honored in this way experience a sense of calm and grounding, and emergence of her rebirthed self.
In a quiet room, with soft music playing, the energy of the room and mother and ceremony holders are cleared. She shares about her experience of birth, wisdom coming in, and who she has become.
Oil is applied to the skin, pulling remnants of the birth from her body, and acknowledging this great achievement. Then the mama’s body is wrapped honoring each part of her body: feet, knees, hips, shoulders, head. The woman is then left to rest as we hold this sacred space for her.
Closing the Bones can be transformational –whether you are 6 weeks or 6 years postpartum.
Our hope is that more women can facilitate, learn about and participate in a Closing the Bones ceremony after birthing.
To learn more check out our doula academy for an hour long training + full replay of the ceremony and so much more about honoring the postpartum time

Sharing with permission from one of our lovely Indie Birth Community members Britney Gonzales We love hearing these amazing stories and sharing them far and wide 3
"I am 2 months postpartum with my 4th baby and I decided to rewatch my last 2 births, since they were both filmed.
My 3rd was an all natural hospital birth; at the time I was very please with how well it went, since my doctor let me catch my own baby and even though they were encouraging me to push, there was no counting to 10 or anything like that. I only had a Hep-lock, my waters released naturally about 40 minutes before I delivered, and wore my own gown, etc.
My 4th was my first home birth with a midwife who only coached me and supported me in my birth; I delivered my baby into this world with no cervical checks, no forced pushing, and no intervention at all.
After experiencing the healing that my home birth provided, watching my hospital birth actually made me sad to the point of tears. I am so appalled that what I experienced is considered the BEST outcome for a hospital birth. I wish more women could know just how spectacular birth can actually be. Thanks to Indie Birth, And my amazing support system, I get to know the true beauty of physiological birth. The attached video is my amazing home birth of my son Enoch, 2 months ago today"

Listening to baby…
In the medical paradigm there’s a really weird and sometimes scary energy around listening to baby. What will they find??? Is my baby okay??? What if something is wrong??? We’ve been conditioned to look outside ourselves for answers that so often lie within.
That system benefits off the fear and disconnect and has convinced many women that the only way to listen to their babies’ heartbeat is by ultrasound or Doppler. And that, that machine knows more than you do as the mom.
The connection to baby is actually sacred and you don’t need a machine to tune in to baby in most cases.
Hearing a heartbeat is not the only way to connect. And ultrasound is sooo often wrong when it comes to determining if something is up with the baby or not.
Feeling baby, palpating your belly, noticing the movements, position, listening with a fetoscope and feeling the energy of the baby are all things the mama can do for herself to tune in. And it can be so fun to include a midwife or mama friend in getting to know this baby.
A fetoscope can be purchased for seriously like $15 on Amazon and is a simple tool passed down from traditional midwifery that allow mama and midwife to get to know that baby. And this way of listening is quickly becoming a lost art…
We had a funny student midwife conversation the other day about other things you can listen to a baby with… a toilet paper roll, a shot glass… ? ear to the belly!
This way of listening is intimate in ways that Doppler and ultrasound just can’t do…
Where are you at with listening? What’s your favorite way of doing so? Are you a seasoned or budding fetoscope fan?

We are ushering in a new paradigm for pregnancy, birth and mothering where the WOMAN is the center of her experience and her chosen support (doula) is smart, intuitive, fearless and brave. The Birth Warrior Training: 120 Day Doula Training & Transformation is a potent, comprehensive 4 month long course created by experienced midwives, for people that won’t compromise truly serving WOMEN (not the system!) as a kick-ass doula. This program uniquely integrates traditional birth and midwifery wisdom, clinical experience, and amazing, unique-only-to-Indie Birth proprietary material and birth videos to promote inner growth, outer knowledge and the confidence to support women in a way that will change our culture. The course emphasizes a whole-woman and truly whole-LIFE approach to acting as a doula, taking into consideration body, mind, and spirit.
It’s also an amazing personal journey created and led by Maryn Green and Margo Blackstone, birth badasses, leaders of the Indie Birth movement, and independent midwives. Maryn and Margo have been leading this autonomous birth movement for 10 years and have created hundreds of podcasts, many classes, webinars, retreats and even a midwifery school. Together, they have served hundreds of women personally in their communities (and around the world) that have benefitted from this knowledge, creating their own fantastic birth experiences!

Who know that pregnancy is a spiritual process and initiation into knowing god (the divine) in a deeper way.
We are all connected to something beyond us.
Spirituality and womanhood are connected.
The pineal gland is more active through the cycles and especially in pregnancy.
Dreams are more vivid and 8 hours of our daily cycle.
Our spirits travel through the stars to meet the great beyond.
And the angels waiting to inhabit earth.
Some come, and some go. Some are just passing by to carry a message for us. Others are on a mission to restore our connection to where we came from and have sacred work to do. Each soul has a purpose.
If you've felt that before in one way or another and want to connect more deeply to that I would like to invite you to the next Drop-In all about spirit babies and our connection to god (the divine)...
To FEEL this wisdom in your body!
