Beer Review 480: Perlenzauber IPA, Privatbrauerei H. Egerer, Großköllnbach, Germany. Purchased: via Anderson (Costco) Brewery: https://www.brauerei-egerer.de/en/
Day 15 of the Kalea Beer Advent Calendar brings us something a little different with this IPA which comes in at 6% ABV. The nose on this was not what I had expected with caramel malt coming through and a hint of floral hops. This poured a clear golden color, with moderate carbonation and a soapy white head. This was thin bodied, bordering on watery. The flavor threw me for a bit of a loop, as the predominant flavor was caramel malt. That being said there was an earthy hop presence throughout, which was not bad. I would drink this again, although I would never guess this was an IPA if given this beer in a blind taste test.

We acquired this beer via Wayne from Bucks County Beer Reviews and want to say thanks for sharing this gem. This beer has a best by date of JAN 96 and comes in at 4.4% ABV. This nitro beer poured a nice looking caramel color with a beautiful tan head and noticeable floaters (once settled). It had a nice hiss when opened and the beer looked like Boddingtons in our glasses with the cascade from the draught can. The initial nose upon opening the can was of impending death, sewer rat, and bum piss. After it settled, you got a bit of that nitrogen smell associated with cans with widgets or other similar nitro devices and not a lot more. This was medium bodied with a thick, frothy head. It tasted surprisingly good given the nasty smell initially emitted from the can. Basically, it was had some light sweet malt and light bitterness. Had we not gotten the nasty smell and saw the floaters, we probably would have finished this pint. We both agreed we would love to try a new can of this, although the brewery has gone through several owners, and according to Untappd, it is now owned by AB-InBev.

Beer Review 404: Steel Reserve High Gravity, The Steel Brewing Co., Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Purchased: SOM Carry Out, Findlay, Ohio.
Brewery: https://www.steelreservealloyseries.com/
Upon learning that the original Steel Reserve was being discontinued, I figured it was time to review this legendary malt liquor. I picked up a single 24 ounce can for a dollar and change. This one comes in at 8.1% ABV and poured a clear pale straw color with a surprisingly frothy white head and a ton of carbonation. The nose was the sweetness you associate with adjunct lagers and not particularly enticing. This was medium bodied and syrupy, with some sweetness, a bit of malt, and a funky alcohol aftertaste.

Snane was kind enough to share this Blueberry Peach Berliner Weisse from Canada's Counterpart Brewing. This one comes in at 4% ABV and poured a cloudy reddish/purplish color with a decent white head with a red hue. The nose was subtly fruity with mild funkiness. This was medium bodied and the flavors followed the nose, with tart blueberry balancing nicely against the semisweet peach and lactose. Overall, this was a crushable berliner weisse perfect for this hot Atlanta day!

Pete was kind enough to send me a can of this oatmeal stout, from Philadelphia's Love City Brewing. This one comes in at 5% ABV and poured a nice dark black, with no light coming through, and a respectable tan head. The nose on this was roasty malt, and a bit of subtle chocolate. This was full bodied and as described on the can. This was smooth, with roasty malt leading the way, some dark chocolate and a hint of coffee bitterness. I think this was well put together, as the flaors complimented each other instead of competing. I loved this beer from love city! Fly, Eagles, Fly!!

Yet another international beer that i acquired through Half Time Beverage in NY, this premium lager from Sarajevo, Bosnia, comes in at 4.9% ABV and poured a clear straw color. There was little visible carbonation and this had a thin white head. The nose was slightly skunky and not much else. This was very light bodied and what we got was light bready malt, then a surprising dry, hoppy finish. We agreed this was similar to a hoppier version of Heineken, and we both said we would have another.

I am beyond thrilled to get another shot at this beer. The Yeti and I tried to review this a year ago,, but my phone ran out of storage space in the middle of recording. Special thanks to Albert for hooking us up with another can, I appreciate the beer! This is an Old Fashioned inspired bourbon barrel aged stout. This one comes in at 11.1% ABV and 35 IBUs. It poured a jet black color with a nice tan head. The nose was oaky bourbon barrel. The body full and smooth, exactly what I like in a stout. The flavors were complex. You got the oaky right away, then some bitter orange peel, vanilla, and bitter chocolate. This was magnificent and I would love to drink this regularly.

The Ginger Yeti was kind enough to pick this beer up while in Pittsburgh and share it with me. This watermelon gose comes in at a light 4.1% ABV and poured a cloudy straw color, with a thin white head and a ton of visible carbonation. The nose was watermelon and a little bit of funk. This was light bodied and actually had a nice sour kick, natural watermelon flavor, and a nice saltiness, as one would expect in a gose. While I admitedly do not care for watermelon, this was a well made beer and I would have another!

Beer #7 from the Costco Kalea Advent Calendar is another Helles Lager. This one comes in at 5.3% ABV with 16 IBUs. This one poured a light straw color, was crystal clear, with a fair amount of carbonation and thick soapy white head. The nose was light cracker malt with some sweetness and some light grassiness. This was medium light bodied and with some crackery malt, light honey sweetness and a dry finish. There was also a bit of a grainy sweetness I associate with macro beers. All in all, it was a decent sessionable helles and i would have another.
