In another video entitled "Speed of Sound" I discuss what factors affect the speed of sound. For comparison, I use the speed of sound in air against the speed of sound in water. By now we know which of the two sound travels faster in but does that mean that it maintains higher fidelity over that same distance? Turn on your ears and listen. Sound Speeds!

Boom pole cleaning and maintenance is something that there's little info about on the websites of the manufacturers themselves. This is not because they want you to destroy your poles so you have to buy replacements but because most sound professionals have tricks they use for cleaning and maintaining their own boom poles. In this video, I'll go over my tips.
Note: Many of the great techniques I've learned were first taught to me from the amazing boom operator Doug Cameron. Much love to you bro!
If you have tricks that you use for maintaining your own boompoles, please write them in the comments below!

It's not often that we see a complete redesign of a product that is already highly effective but Cinela did just this with their redesign of the Cinela Leo (Leonard Ball) windscreens.
I own quite a few Cinela shockmounts and a set of Leo-20 and Leo-25 with fur (and have used them all on my booms for years) so when I tell you that they've made some amazing changes, you should take note.
In this video I show you the old and the new and why you should consider investing in a new Leo or upgrade the ones you currently have.

Full disclosure: Cinela send me the new Leo-20 and Leo-25 inside frames to upgrade my old Leos with in exchange for a fair and honest review. I assure you that it had no influence on my opinion!

Although many people look at price tags to get an idea of the quality of a product, you can't do that with the Deity S-mic 2. It is feature packed, offers specifications that rivals and even exceeds those on microphones 3X the price and is priced modestly in the mid $300s. While many YouTube channels talk for 10 minutes about the S-mic 2 or compare it to other microphones while only giving you a glimpse of how it sounds, I believe that you need to hear this microphone in as many ways possible to fully know it. In this video not only will I perform standard tests on the S-mic 2, I'll test it in ways you wouldn't expect.

Deity sent me the S-mic 2 to test and review. Although I do get to keep the microphone, in no way has my opinion been bought or influenced by Deity.

To purchase Behind the Sound Cart: A Veteran's Guide to Sound on the Set book:
Paperback book: https://geni.us/SoundUtilityBook
eBook (Kindle Edition): https://geni.us/SoundUtilityeBook
It's very rare that veterans of any craft are willing to share information that took them decades to learn but in "Behind the Sound Cart: A Veteran's Guide to Sound on the Set", Patrushkha Mierzwa pours out decades of first hand knowledge acquired in the production sound department on A-list movies. To be clear, this is not a book on Production Sound, it is THE book on Production Sound!
In 1980 Patrushkha began her career in the film industry working in the sound department. In those days seeing a woman working on a film behind the camera was extremely rare especially in the sound department. As one of the first lady boom operators she worked her way up from small productions to large budget features and has even been part of Oscar nominated sound teams twice! With over 4 decades of experience behind her she chose to release a detailed manual to how to achieve sound success in sound for film.
The depth that she dives isn't noticeable at first because she takes it slow and builds up a strong foundation in the first few chapters. Unlike other books that touch and go Patrushkha's explains things in broad terms before diving deeper and deeper. Just when you think she's not completely finishing on a particular topic, you see another chapter dedicated to a detailed look at that very thing. She flows logically from subject to subject and by the end you've achieved a higher level understand than a 4 year university graduate. Her real world experience and easy yet detailed method of conveyance combined with stories and trivia make this book the new standard by which all other guides are judged.

It's often been guessed at but never before quantified exactly how much weight a boom operator holds over his or her head. In this video I investigate just that... how much weight does a boom operator hold?
I start by measuring a very light combination of microphone, shockmount and wind protection - a DPA 4017B microphone in a Cinela Osix shockmount and wearing the softie included with a Rode NTG5. For this test I'm using a Camry Luggage weighing tool with a tare feature which allows me to zero out the empty weight of the device before placing a boom in the loop to be weighed. For the last tests the long shotgun microphone is a Rode NTG8 inside a Rycote Windjammer and a HWC.

The microphone, shockmount and windscreen weight 5 ounces together!
Results for 2 feet between hand and the pole extended 13 feet to the microphone:
Base - 10.8 lbs downwards (base)
External wrapped Canare cable with Neutrik EMC-F connector - 12.3 lbs
Retest base - 10.6 (2% difference)
HD-TX - 13.5 lbs
Small Zepp - 13.5 lbs
Long Zepp - 17.1 lbs
HWC/Cat - 27.2 lbs
Full stick with everything - 42.7 lbs
I also measured the up/down force on the rear/front hands...
2 feet between hands, boom extended 9 feet:
Front (holding up the pole) = 6.4 lbs, Back (pulling down on the pole) = 3.4 lbs
3 feet between hands, boom extended 9 feet:
Front (holding up the pole) = 5.6 lbs, Back (pulling down on the pole) = 2.3 lbs
2 feet between hands, boom extended 14 feet:
Front (holding up the pole) = 10.6 lbs, Back (pulling down on the pole) = 7.5 lbs
3 feet between hands, boom extended 14 feet:
Front (holding up the pole) = 8.8 lbs, Back (pulling down on the pole) = 4.6 lbs
For this test I used an Ambient QSM, QS and QS inside a QP-120 extension.

You may have heard me say that you should use roll off/ high pass/ low cut filters - whatever you want to call it when hand holding a microphone in a shockmount... but why? It all boils down to rumble picked up in the mic. Typically the human voice doesn't go below about 85Hz so why should you record below that when you'll likely pick up a bunch of noise? In this video we'll explore that very topic!
Please note that this only applies to film and television sound recording. If you're in a studio and don't touch the mic, you likely don't need to use roll off.

If you are looking for a low budget but powerful tool for mixing and recording small or no budget film projects and DO NOT NEED TIMECODE then the Rodecaster Pro has a lot to offer. From stand alone recording without a computer to isolated track recordings, the Rodecaster may very well be the best recorder with built in fader mixing surface on the market.
It's true that the Rodecaster Pro is a podcasting tool but many things in life have dual purposes and the Rodecaster Pro is one of those. Many small film projects shoot on DSLR or mirrorless cameras (sometimes even point and shoot or phones) but sound requires more than that. Provided it's set up correctly, the Rodecaster Pro could be everything you want it to be and in this video I show you how to set it up to give you the best mixing experience for small films.
