Interesting Conversations In English ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/conversations-in-english-15/
Today’s English language listening practice is all about science fiction made real. If you’ve ever watched any of the planet of the apes films, what you hear in this podcast will definitely make you think twice. Today’s conversation in English will contain a lot of useful vocabulary and hopefully keep you interested in the topic.
The moral and ethical questions that the genetic science talked about in today’s English lesson should keep people up at night. It's almost the plot line for a horror movie, where someone innocently asks "What could possibly go wrong?"
Once again, science is pushing way ahead of societal norms. I only came across the research because of my interest in the human brain. Once I started researching the topic for this podcast, I could not stop looking for more. It seems there is a lot of active research taking place.
The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.⭐ Isaac Asimov, Scientist and Author
Most people will hardly know what’s happening and most people are not being asked if they are OK with what the scientists are doing. Just because you can do something does not mean you should. The research I’ve found is definitely not mainstream news.
I’d be interested to hear what you think about today’s English lesson. As always, I love to hear from listeners. Good or bad, just email us your thoughts. You can find our email addresses at the bottom of every web page on our website here.

Today we have some easy English listening practice. So just find some time to slip your headphones on, step away from what you are doing right now, and focus on listening to some English language.
So I’m going to talk about a UK TV program that’s so popular, it’s a national treasure. A national treasure means someone or something of which a country is very proud. Perhaps the presenters of this TV program have in the past been national treasures in their own right.
Now I know many of our listeners might worry that they cannot see the program in question, but the internet has changed all that. I’ve embedded a clip of the program from YouTube in the article. So if you're interested, you can watch from anywhere in the world.
A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

As with all of our listening practice, we need you to focus on what you are hearing. You need to pick out any phrases, idioms or vocabulary you don’t understand and look them up. We provide a transcript with every English audio lesson to help you do this.
When you’ve listened to the audio and you are happy, and you comprehend most of what you are hearing. You then need to schedule a time when you will comeback to listen to the audio again. This spaced repetition listening is what will encourage your brain to store what it hears in longer term memory.
It’s during this repeat listening, where you are not struggling to understand the content, where you will work on English fluency. You will also improve your pronunciation and speed of your English language recall. It’s the important work needed to achieve English fluency.

Cold English Idioms
The weather in the UK is suddenly getting cold, with our first proper frosts. Apparently we are getting weather from Sweden and Norway and we might even have a white Christmas, which has not happened in a long time. I guess, this is why I’m hearing so many English idioms related to cold at the moment. It was the Prime Minister who was On Thin Icein the Brexit negotiations with the EU. Or the NHS being Snowed Underwith extra work because of the Pandemic.
Anyway, while I snuggled under my blanket on the sofa and watched the English news, subconsciously an Adept English idioms lesson was born. Idioms are relevant and always fun to talk about, confusing to new English language learners and used all the time, definitely worth spending some time on them today in our English language lesson podcast .

✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-lessons-listening-practice-climate/
The COP26 was a two week UN-sponsored international conference held in the Scottish Event Campus, Glasgow, UK. COP stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’ this is a term used by the United Nations Climate Change which is used to refer to meetings held annually during its Convention period. The conference seeks to reduce global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, aiming for 1.5 degrees if possible.
With important countries not attending the event, and some important world leaders sleeping during presentations, ask yourself, are we taking these problems seriously any more? Even the event’s name suggests we have genuine problems agreeing to make changes collectively. We are in the 26th meeting and we still don’t have a common world agreement dealing with the key issue of temperature rises.
Not only can you practice listening to natural, conversational English being used in real-life situations, talking about real-world events. But we have decided upon a little gem of a phrase that is often used when speaking English.
You can apply the phrase “A tough nut to crack” to a person or a difficult problem. Given the recent increase in Brexit quotes we decided that we can learn about a common English phrase and catch up on the Brexit negotiations all at the same time.

If you want to become fluent in English, a fluent English speaker, if you want to understand and speak English in a way that’s natural and flows, then you need to prioritise listening to and understanding everyday people speaking English. Today I’m going to talk about how we learn to speak a language and what’s happening with your brain when you speak English.
The One Skill That Will Make You Fluent In English Speaking
✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-how-to/
I can’t count the number of times I have spoken to an English language student and hear "I can understand, write and read English pretty well. However, when it comes to speaking the language I get stuck." If you want to learn to speak a language well, it is much more important to listen to, and quickly understand what you hear, than to read and write. If you want to speak English well, you need to listen to a lot of spoken English, until your language comprehension is great, and really fast.
Traditional approaches to teaching new languages, especially classroom based learning, spend a lot of time on reading and writing and a lot less time on listening and speaking. The language used is often fake, made up, and pretty useless in the real world.
Poor language comprehension, and being slow to comprehend what you are listening to is the No. 1 reason people struggle to speak a new language. You get so focused on working out what’s being said to you. You have little or no time to work on what you need to say back (your ideas as words and phrases) and how you need to say it (grammar and pronunciation).
Listening to lots and lots of English being spoken naturally is the No. 1 way to improve your English language comprehension skills and comprehension speed.
You're lucky. This way of learning to speak a language is a built in part of being human. Every single one of us is born with the ability to learn a language. We all have a language learning toolkit we know works, and we know we can listen and speak a language before we can read or write a single word in that language.
Everyone can learn to speak a new language. We all have the tools we used to learn to speak our first language. If you want to speak a language, being able to listen and understand what you hear automatically is what enables speaking.

Today we practice listening to English language being spoken by a native British English speaker. This listening practice conversation is about supply issues in the UK. The subject of this podcast lesson is not that important. The English language you will learn is.
English Listening Practice Join the discussion. Listen to learn. ✔Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-lorry-shortage/
Supply problems in the UK may be important on Sept 2021, right now, especially if you're being inconvenienced. However, in a few months, or years, this problem will have come and gone. The point is the topic is interesting, but the real value of listening to this is the English listening practice that helps build up the language learning parts of your brain.
When something goes wrong, it's easy to jump to conclusions. You're angry and you usually want the problem to just go away as quickly as possible. It's interesting to see the news headlines, which are all about failure, panic, etc. All of which encourage people to engage (usually with advertising) at a superficial and selfish level.
A good truck driver needs discipline. Traffic, weather, eating, sleeping, showering, fueling, getting work done on the truck; it takes a truck driver a long time to learn how to jungle everything.⭐ Joanna Dunham, Actress
Politicians use the situation to punish those in power, the people in charge. People who did not want Brexit use it to say, “I told you so!”. Lorry drivers use the problems to highlight long-term problems with their industry. The worriers use the problems to highlight how fragile a world we live in. The climate change people shout about how we need to consume less. It's exhausting to listen to.
In reality, it's never one simple, obvious reason for the issues we have in UK lorry based supply delivery today. I can think of at least 6 or 7 contributing factors to the problems we have right now in the UK, and I know very little about the industry. When you live in a global "just in time…" delivery world, it's very easy for things to go wrong.
One trend I've noticed in the UK, and in the western world in general, we are not used to hardships. We have a pretty peaceful life much of the time. Things typically work and we've all become used to it, so when something breaks, we typically overreact. Who knows, I might be wrong, and in a year we still have issues in the UK, but regardless, I can guarantee that listening to this English language learning podcast will see something positive come from it.

English Listening Practice - A Rant Or An Opinion? ✔ Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-8/
Today’s English listening practice is a conversation that you get to decide if the content is a rant or an opinion piece. We explain what the difference between these two different ways of communicating a point of view are. Along the way, we also talk about a recent phenomenon brought about by businesses and government services moving to online and telephone because of the pandemic.
A phenomenon is something that can be seen or experienced that is unusual or interesting. So today we talk about one of the side effects that has happened as many of the UK’s businesses have adapted to online life and the necessity to use phones to get things done where we used to talk to people face to face.
Most things in the UK are returning to normal following some pretty strict lock-down rules. You would imagine that shops and places of business would be re-opening their physical offices and shops. But many businesses who were forced to move online or move much of their customer interaction to telephone and online are not re-opening their physical shops or places of business.
They have actually saved a lot of money. The move online means they don’t have to pay as much rent or business rates and they need less staff. As a result, some businesses, like household goods, are experiencing a big increase online sales and store sales are decreasing. I think we can all expect to have to deal with the issues raised in today’s English listening podcast more often.
