Ep. 5047 – Gar Alperovitz on America’s War Crimes in Japan – 8/27/2019
Historian Gar Alperovitz shares the history of America’s use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Contrary to what most of us learned in school, many of the top military officers and intelligence officials were adamant at the time that use of the bombs was unnecessary to get the Japanese to surrender, which they expected to happen as soon as the Soviet Union invaded. The bombs were used instead as a political maneuver to intimidate the Russians, but which of course only led to the disastrous arms race of the cold war.
Gar Alperovitz is a historian, political economist, activist, and writer. He has taught at the University of Maryland, Cambridge University, and Harvard and is the author of Atomic Diplomacy: Hiroshima and Potsdam and The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb. Rep. Barbara Lee discusses how how it felt being the only Congressperson (including Ron Paul) to vote against the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force, how the AUMF continues to be used for justifying all manner of military actions, the Constitutional duty of Congress to declare war, the failure of public schools to teach foreign affairs or geography well and the need to maintain sanctions and reestablish diplomacy with Iran in order to "play it safe" on their nuclear program.

Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst and co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), discusses the hype and the reality of the Iraq War “surge” that allowed President Bush to withdraw without admitting defeat – by sacrificing 1000 American soldiers and creating the chaos that ultimately gave rise to the Islamic State.

The Intercept’s Trevor Aaronson joins the show to talk about the travesty of justice in the trial of Hamid Hayat, who has finally been released after nearly 15 years in prison. Hayat was an alleged terrorist, convicted based on a coerced confession he gave to FBI agents under duress, as well as recordings from his conversations with an FBI informant who had pretended to befriend Hayat’s family. Hayat is just one of many such cases of U.S. government entrapment, which make up the majority of supposed terrorism prosecutions.
Trevor Aaronson is a contributing writer for The Intercept and executive director of the nonprofit Florida Center for Investigative Reporting. He is the author of The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI’s Manufactured War on Terrorism. Find him on Twitter @trevoraaronson.

William Hartung comes on the show to discuss the latest in Yemen, particularly with respect to the political relationship between Saudi Arabia and the U.S. He explains that the Saudis finally have an opportunity to use all the American weapons they’ve been buying for the last few decades, essentially as a stimulus program for America. President Trump loves to claim that these sales are great for the economy, but the deals aren’t nearly as big as he sometimes claims, in reality supporting only about 20,000 jobs. The Saudis have claimed that the many civilian deaths in their airstrikes have been accidental, but there are so many of them it’s difficult to believe they’re all really mistakes.
William Hartung is director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy, and the author of Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex. Find him on Twitter @WilliamHartung.

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) discusses why Congress and the White House won’t be able to resist the temptation of military intervention in Libya and Saudi Arabia (should the uprisings spread there); how the US exports inflation, since commodities are priced in dollars; Ben Bernanke’s opinion that central banks are always the solution to, not the cause of, the world’s economic problems; the dollar’s devaluation reflected in the price of gold; and why, legalized or not, competing currencies will be used in times of economic collapse.

David Krieger, president of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, discusses the 20,000+ nuclear weapons still around (almost all in US and Russia), the only 4 countries with deployed nukes (US, Britain, Russia,France); how nuke levels are decreasing, but not across the board and not nearly fast enough, why the new START treaty is really only a start, why the US has a moral obligation to pursue nuclear disarmament and a couple of flaws in the “deterrence” and MAD doctrines.
