Go to a florist shop in Goldenrod City and the lady will give you the Squirtbottle after you have the Plain Badge. With the Squirtbottle, go north to Route 36 and you’ll see some weird tree blocking the way. Save your game before you interact with it. Use the Squirtbottle and the tree will identify itself as Sudowoodo. Sudowoodo is on Level 20. If it’s running out of HP, it will use Flail. It can also copy one of your moves by using Mimic. After getting all 8 gym badges, go west from Viridian City to Route 22 to encounter your rival once again. For the 7th battle, he adds Exeggcute to his team. Exeggcute will combo by using Leech Seed then Poisonpowder to gain its HP faster. After the battle, continue west to the Pokémon League.

Canalave City’s gym has elevator platforms that will take you back and forth between floors in a maze with trainers in sight. Once you navigated the maze, you’ll battle the gym leader. Bryon uses Steel type Pokémon. Magneton will use Tri Attack, which can cause paralysis, burning, or freezing. Steelix will summon a sandstorm to slightly hurt those except for 3 types for 5 turns. Bastiodon will use Stone Edge for higher chances of critical hits and Metal Burst to cause double the damage the amount it took from any move. After the battle, you’ll receive the Mine Badge and a TM91 (Flash Cannon). Flash Cannon has a 10% chance of lowering the target’s Special Defense stat.

After solving the mysteries in the Sealed Chamber, go to the west side of Route 105 and you’ll find the Island Cave. Read the visual braille message, which tells you to “stop and wait”. Just wait for a few minutes and don’t move at all until the way opens. Enter the room and you’ll see Regice. Save your game before you interact. Regice is on Level 40. Marshal has a full team of Fighting type Pokémon. Breloom will use Spore to put opponents to sleep and Mach Punch for first strikes. Throh will use Superpower for big damage at the expense of its own Attack and Defense stats. Toxicroak will use Toxic to poison opponents and Venoshock on those who are already poisoned for more damage. Moves like Aerial Ace and Psychic are good for this battle.

Celadon City’s gym leader, Erika uses Grass type Pokémon. Tangela will use Sleep Powder to put opponents to sleep then prevent escaping by using Bind. Jumpluff will slow the target down with Cotton Spore then use Leech Seed to steal their HP every turn. Victreebel will use Razor Leaf so hits will turn critical often. Bellossom will use Sunny Day to summon a harsh sunlight for 5 turns. With the harsh sunlight, SolarBeam won’t need a first turn to charge up and Synthesis will restore more HP. After winning, you’ll receive the Rainbow Badge and a TM19 (Giga Drain). Giga Drain restores the user’s HP by half the damage the opponent took.

Make your way through Area 4 of the Black Tower and you’ll take on another boss trainer named Danelle, who is originally a Ranger class trainer. Gigalith will use Stealth Rock to hurt those who switch into battle and Bulldoze to slow them down. After beating both Team Rocket Admins, you’ll take on a scientist who was tailing you when you were about to retrieve the Sapphire at the Dotted Hole. This scientist stole the Sapphire you were after and vows to sell it for a chunk load of money. Speak with this scientist and battle him. 3 of the opponents will use Spark to paralyze targets. Magneton will use Tri Attack to cause paralysis, burning, or freezing. Porygon will use Conversion to change type and Recover to restore HP. After defeating this scientist, he will hand over the Sapphire so you can bring it to Celio at the Pokémon Net Center on One Island.
