did-the-soviet-union-celebrate-christmas
Hello, comrades. Ever since I became a Communist in 2016, when Christmas comes along, I always wonder; did the people of the Soviet Union celebrate Christmas? Well, not quite. The Soviet Union was not a religious country, however, religion wasn't banned, people were given the right to believe in what I like to call, clap-trap. As long as religion didn't interfere with state matters, as long as religion didn't step foot into educational institutions, if you wanted to pray, you could go to your local church, mosque, synagogue, wherever you wanted to go and do so. All of the stories that are told about how 'the Communists destroyed religious buildings' are total rubbish.
Whilst the Soviet Union didn't really celebrate Christmas, celebrating the New Year on the 31st of December was promoted instead; by far, it was everyone's favourite holiday. New Year's celebrations often meant eating a lot of food and spending time with your family and friends. New Year's celebrations are all about saying goodbye to the past year and the welcoming of a new one, it is focused on celebrating happiness, love, prosperity and relationships.
The Soviet Union also had their own version of Santa Clause called Grandfather Frost, or Дед Мороз (Ded Moroz - Dee-at Mo-rez) in Russian. Grandfather Frost's roots lie deep in Slavic culture and Russian fairy tails. Grandfather Frost looks very different from Santa Clause, nonetheless, he still brings presents to the children. Unlike Santa Clause who just gives away presents to the children, Grandfather Frost would often make children work for their presents, which if you ask me, is a great example of Socialism. The reason why I say this is because under Socialism, all of the basic necessities, such as education, healthcare, food and housing are all provided for you for free or at a very low cost, and the only reason why you would work under Socialism is not to pay the bills or just manage to put food on the table like you would do under Capitalism, but for pleasure. Under Socialism, you work to get nice things.
