GRABONG - Basic Thai Quarterstaff Handling for beginners
Basic handling techniques for Thai quarterstaff. GRABONG (quarterstaff) is an armed PAHUYUTH discipline, that deals with the art of quarterstaff fighting.
GRABONG and other PAHUYUTH weapon fighting methods were used on ancient battlefields and should not be confused with Krabi Krabong, which was invented much later (under King Rama II, 1767-1824 A.D.) with the clear intention of "entertainment, sport and presentation" in mind.

MUAI (also DTIE MUAI or MUAI DUEKDAMMBAN) is traditional boxing using the four bodily weapons of fist, foot, elbow and knee. More info: https://pahuyuth.com/en/muai/
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
About the Foot Initiation:
In order to learn MUAI, students (green belt) start off to spar with boxing techniques only. Once a student reaches certain knowledge about boxing techniques he or she will be introduced into the art of kicking with a special initiation ritual.
On a single day the elder students, who once went through this treatment themselves, spar one after another with their fellow student and deliver a well dosed and well aimed amount of low kicks to the legs/shins of the younger student. Of course this student is allowed to defend himself with fists and feet to the best of his or her abilities.
Although this once-in-a-lifetime experience is quite painful, and hard to endure it almost never fails. If applied correctly, the foot initiation helps to prepare the student's mind and body for the intended usage of kicking techniques and defenses. In most cases the effect lasts for a lifetime and any kind of shin conditioning or protection gear becomes needless.
Since ages, every PAHUYUTH student has to go through this initiation and especially for the student's friends it is a great honor to take part in this unique und unforgettable event.
MUAI is a traditional standup fighting method, that should not be confused with Muay Thai, Muay Boran or regional styles (such as Muay Chaiya, Muay Korat and many more). It derived directly from Ling Lom (unarmed Pahuyuth, actually used in warfare) and is the oldest and probably the most conclusive of all Muay styles. Due to its unique origin MUAI not only includes techniques, that have become illegal in sports (Muay Boran), but also many techniques, tricks and tactics that were never used in show or competition. In compare to the relatively new "Boran" (ancient) one could very well describe MUAI as "Duekdammban" (prehistoric). Today MUAI is taught for self-defense or security reasons and for the preservation of cultural heritage.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
MUAI – THE ORIGINAL MUAY BORAN
Through the film ONG BAK with Tony Jaa in the leading role, traditional fighting styles from Thailand became known worldwide. What few know: The so-called “ancient Muay” (Muay Boran) is hardly older than the mentioned film from 2003 and has little in common with an ancient war martial art.
Muay Boran was created in the mid-1990s when MMA (mixed-martial arts) began to drive Muay Thai out of the market. An economically oriented interest group from Thailand then created a loose curriculum from techniques that were no longer allowed in sportive competition (Muay Veti or Muay Thai) and imaginative show fighting techniques from the time after the retreat of the old free warriors.
For further differentiation the wearing of hand wraps and ropes became fashionable. They were supposed to have been used by ancient warriors on the battlefield. However, this seems illogical if one considers that combatants on historical battlefields usually carried war weapons (e.g. Thai swords) and one cannot wield them professionally with bandaged hands.
Muay Boran was and is a good business for many. Whether this was a favor to the Thai culture lies in the eye of the beholder.
In contrast to the Muay Boran, the MUAI taught at the Pahuyuth School in Berlin is indeed “ancient” and looks back on a history and development of more than one thousand years. For this reason it can be called “The original Muay Boran”.

Part 3 in our series about legitimate self-defense according to German law. Here's the original law 'a teacher' refers to:
German Criminal Code - Section 32 - Self-defence
(1) A person who commits an act in self-defence does not act unlawfully.
(2) Self-defence means any defensive action that is necessary to avert an imminent unlawful attack on oneself or another.
§ 32 StGB - Notwehr

Please note, that some of the techniques in this video are not 100% suitable for self-defense purposes, depending on the laws of the country you live in. We do not take any responsibility and we are not liable for any damage caused through whatever you are doing.
Please remember for a lawful and thus realistic self-defense:
1. Real self-defense begins, when you can not just run away.
2. Real self-defense ends, when an attack is averted.
3. Always stay within the laws of your country!
The self-defense method we use in our videos, was derived from PAHUYUTH.

? MUAI (also DTIE MUAI or MUAI DUEKDAMMBAN) is traditional boxing using the four bodily weapons of fist, foot, elbow and knee.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To make a living during times of peace, from approx. 900 AD Pahuyuth warriors began to stage improvised fights employing punches, kicks and strikes of the elbows and knees. From this arose a new method of fighting called MUAI which later evolved to become the Thai national sport Muay Thai and other Southeast Asian fighting styles, such as Muay Chaiya, Muay Korat, Muay Thasao, Bokator, Pradal Serey, Lethwei or Muay Lao for example.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a direct spinoff of LING LOM, MUAI proved itself as highly effective in hand-to-hand combat, which is why the ancient warriors brought it back into Pahuyuth and maintained it in its original form. Due to its unique origin, MUAI can be described as the „original Muay Boran”(ancient Muay).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the beginners level, MUAI is trained using 8 oz. Boxing gloves. From the middle level these are left off and the advanced students include ground fighting techniques from LING LOM in their sparring. Due to the focus on unregulated fighting with bare fists, MUAI is highly suited to modern self-defense purposes and offers students a practical introduction to Pahuyuth.

This video is of a Thai Staff Dance at the Loy Kratong Festival in the Netherlands in the 1980s. This type of dance has been passed onl in an abbreviated or re-enacted version by Krabi Krabong practitioners. So here is the original dance from a time before Krabi Krabong was invented. We hope you enjoy!
=============================
About Krabi Krabong:
=============================
While Grabong (staff, quarterstaff) was used in warfare for centuries, Krabi Krabong (saber and staff) is a relatively new invention. Krabi Krabong is a show and sports martial art that was invented during the reign of King Rama II (1809-1826 A.D.). Krabi Krabong was originally created to be an attractive, representative and safe sporting activity for noble people. Later on, it became a kind of stage fencing for plays and for the entertainment of foreign guests at the royal court. For more than a century, Krabi Krabong was reserved exclusively for members of the royal family. It was not until 1920 AD that a man by the name of Ajarn Nak Thaephatsadin Na Ayutthaya (with the benevolent support of King Rama VI) brought the Krabi Krabong to the public. A few years later (around 1936 AD) Krabi Krabong was included in the curriculum of Thai sports universities. From here Krabi Krabong became a popular sport in Thailand. From here Krabi Krabong became a popular sport in Thailand.Recently, many people (especially non-Thai people) have been told that Krabi Krabong was invented by the ancient warriors of Siam to fight on battlefields. Like Muay Boran, Krabi Krabong has never been deployed in a warlike conflict.
=============================
About Grabong:
=============================
GRABONG (staff, quarterstaff) is traditional armed combat with body length objects such as quarterstaves, spears or broomsticks as improvised weapons. Southeast Asian wanderers and monks have always used simple bamboo sticks to transport provisions and luggage. Most likely that resourceful Pahuyuth Free-Warriors have used such staffs for protection against waylayers and wild animals ever since. A typical free warrior GRABONG is an even, about body length long staff made of heavy wood. Ancient war staffs were additionally covered with braided steel wire or riveted with metal plates to withstand sword blows. The special feature of the GRABONG are the complex turning techniques, which distinguish this unique discipline from most staff fighting methods and make it possible to use it in narrow or obstructed environments. It is said that a good GRABONG-Warrior can move his long staff so skilfully that it looks as supple as a rope.

In order to join a weapon discipline PAHUYUTH students are required to make their own training weapons (always two of them). Here's a tutorial how to build practice swords for DAB (sword).
Things you need:
- 2x Wooden sticks (length 30cm, Ø 2,8 cm). Most of our students use pinewood, because it's rather inexpensive and easy to get in Europe.
- 1x Masking Tape (width 3 cm).
- 1x White Duct Tape (width 1,9 cm).
- 1x Black Duct Tape (width 1,9 cm).
- Sandpaper to smoothen edges and surfaces
- Pencil and Carpenter's rule
- Scissors or knife to cut tape

=============================
About Daab:
=============================
Unlike Krabi Krabong, Daab was actually used in warfare. Thai swords (DAAB) are worldwide unique and not related to any other sword type. It originally comes from a simple rice trucheon (Gab) or a weed scythe (Gab Gleeh). Such tools were used as improvised weapons against Chinese invaders more than 4000 years ago and were developed into fighting swords over time. Typical for this type of sword fighting is the use of the rather centrally located center of gravity, which allows a high rotation speed and complex movement patterns, as well as the use of the grip end with which blunt strikes can be executed. Authentic Thai sword art is always trained with heavy training weapons made of wood or steel, but never with light rattan or bamboo. The Pahuyuth School in Berlin is the only school in the world where the infamous DAAB NARESUAN (also known as “Sword of Ayutthaya”) is taught. A special one-handed sword style developed and secretly passed on by a paramilitary special unit under the reign of King Naresuan (1590-1605 A.D.)

Part 5 in our series about legitimate self-defense according to German law.
