In this board game design theory class, Jon Back looks into game design knowledge, splitting it into design tips in the form of small nuggets of knowledge for different parts of the design process, each containing one piece of a larger puzzle. The reason for the masterclass lectures and lessons is that we as designers need to deeply understand each and every tool in our toolbox. Even the most fundamental game design elements can be dissected and understood. This can be seen as game design tutorials on specific game design elements for beginners and experts, or it can be seen as a way to improve your knowledge for your own future creative use. After all, most of us are creative geeks in one form or another. In this episode we cover feedback loops, both positive and negative. These are two types of design in a cybernetic system, and positive/negative is not a description of good and bad. Both are useful in different types of designs, depending on your reason for using them. They affect the game end state, and extend or squeeze together the player field. This can affect things such as the risk of runaway leader and predictable winner. It can also change the feel of the competition. In the video we also mention social interaction and its impact on feedback loops, showing how trading, buying and selling is a form of social feedback loop in for example Settlers of Catan. Other examples from the video include Monopoly, Mario Kart and Sim City, all games with strong feedback loops as part of their game design elements. The series is inspired by the gameplay design patterns concept, originally written about by Staffan Björk and Jussi Holopainen ( https://amzn.to/2DQdniA ), where they structure and organize all kinds of gameplay design elements, but this series takes a more loose approach to the concept.
