Mead vs Wine, Finale and Tasting. We rack it for the last time, and give it a real taste test. It's surprising how different they are, and well, to be honest, they're 3 full ABV points apart too! That, in itself is a bit shocking. The wine vs mead debate isn't really over, since this is just one test, and well... we love testing.

Pirates Blood Review - Wild Blossom Meadery
Today we try a capsicumel from Wild Blossom Meadery. It's a mead made with three types of chiles. Wild Blossom Meadery does some pretty amazing things, so we thought we'd simply share some information from their website:

The meads produced at Wild Blossom Meadery & Winery are among the most sustainably produced beverages in the world. With more than 30 years of winemaking experience, Wild Blossom Meadery & Winery is the first winery in Chicago and the only producer of mead on the Northern Illinois Wine Trail. Being a mead producer, at Wild Blossom Meadery & Winery we raise our own bees and collect our own honey.

Today we taste our Buckwheat Blueberry Hydromel. It's Naturally Carbonated and even sweetened with Erythritol. At only 7 weeks old, this mead is pretty young still. So, how did it do? Do we detect the buckwheat honey? Is the Blueberry flavor coming through? Does Erythritol work as a sweetener, and the biggest question: DID IT CARBONATE?

ABV - How to Calculate Alcohol in your Homebrew - Have We Been Doing it Wrong ALL THIS TIME? We've been using a "more accurate" method for calculating how much alcohol is in our mead and wines and beers, but is it really better than the simple old fashioned one? Is there a better way? What is the best way to calculate ABV?
At it's most basic, you need to have specific gravity readings, one at the actual time the mead, wine, cider or beer is made, called the original gravity. Then, you need a reading done at the end of fermentation of your brew called a final gravity. These should be taken by a hydrometer. While refractometers can be used prior to alcohol creation, they become inaccurate once fermentation begins. There are tables online to help calculate once alcohol is present, but a hydrometer is much simpler and in our opinion more accurate for finding your specific gravity.
