“The Hague Hacking Scrap” for two pianos is a piece by the late Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, who was the brother of fellow composer Jurriaan Andriessen, the son of composer Hendrik Andriessen, and the nephew of composer Willem Andriessen. The piece, commissioned by the Catholic University of Leuven for the Transit New Music Festival, is inspired by the Hakken hardcore techno rave dance, which emphasizes speed and prioritizes bass beats, and is dedicated to the pianist duo Gerard Bouwhuis and Cees van Zeeland on their 25th anniversary.
Originally named “The Hague Hacking”, the composer amended the title and renamed it to its current form, “The Hague Hacking Scrap”, in 2008 (when he penned a new piece of the same name and utilized existing material within the aforementioned older piece). There are two primary sections in the work. The first consists of an urgent toccata-like passage, where rapid thirty-second notes almost ceaselessly flow in quick-succession. The second section contains bumpy, unevenly blocked chords that dot the musical soundscape.
