Driftveil City’s gym uses elevator lifts that go deep underground. Find the one that takes you deeper down to find the gym leader. Clay uses Ground type Pokémon. Krokorok will use Swagger to confuse opponents and Torment to prevent opponents from using stale moves. Palpitoad will use Muddy Water to make targets less accurate and Aqua Ring to slowly restore HP every turn. Excadrill will use Hone Claws to become more accurate and Rock Slide to make targets flinch. After the battle, you’ll receive the Quake Badge. Later, when you see a golden spider web blocking the Chargestone Cave, Clay will dispatch his Krokorok to destroy it and he will give you a TM78 (Bulldoze). Vermilion City’s gym contains trash cans. Interact with the trash can to see which one has a switch under it. Once you find the first switch, find the other one. If you’re wrong on the 2nd one, you’ll have to find the first one again. If you find both switches in a row, the motorized doors will open so you can battle the gym leader. Lt. Surge uses Electric type Pokémon. Most Electric type moves can paralyze targets. If you have any Ground type Pokémon, like Diglett for example, that type won’t suffer anything from Electric type moves. After the battle, you’ll receive the Thunder Badge and a TM24 (Thunderbolt). Thunderbolt has a 10% chance of paralyzing the target.

In this round, Haunter is removed and replaced with Misdreavus. Golbat has evolved as well. The first Gengar has a 3-way combo with Confuse Ray, Hypnosis, and Dream Eater. Misdreavus will immobilize targets using Attract and Thunderbolt. Arbok will use Double Team and Giga Drain to steal some HP. The 2nd Gengar holds a Chesto Berry to avoid sleep for one time and knows some good attacks. A 2-move combo like Shadow Ball and Psychic would be a good fit for this battle.
