A New Intro to Zero Books at 50k: Re-Thinking Critical Theory with Guy Debord
In celebration of recently passing 50k youtube subscribers this video is reintroducing Zero Books as we set out to rethink critical theory, starting with the Situationist International’s Guy Debord. This video includes a modified dérive or an unplanned journey through an urban landscape. The aim of the journey is to discover the mood of criticism as it has been laid out by city planners and to arrive at some sort of unplanned objective conclusion.
We May Be On the Way of Realising One of Our Fondest Dreams By the ISO, a new collaborative project by John-Robin Bold and Andy Cowling. https://soundcloud.com/insearchofiso
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.
Ben Burgis takes on Ben Shapiro about Judaism and leftism. He challenges Ben Shapiro's accusation that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is an anti-Semite and argues against Shapiro's claim that real Jews are conservative.

How Slavoj Zizek provoked Jordan Peterson:
Zizek's essay for the Independent "Why do people find Jordan Peterson so convincing?" provoked a defensive reaction from both Peterson and his fans. This video will explore just why Žižek wrote the essay the way he did and how Žižek's assessment that Peterson's hot takes on subjects like white privilege and neo-Marxists ought to be slotted next the pseudo-observations of clowns like Milo Yiannopoulos.

"Between 1980 and 2007, household debt doubled as a percentage of GDP, with most of the growth in residential mortgages, although auto, credit card, student loan, medical and criminal legal debt also grew precipitously. In the first months of 2020, as the pandemic took hold, household debt rose to $14.3 trillion, $1.6 trillion higher than the record set in the middle of the financial crisis. Today, more than 40 %of indebted households use credit cards to cover basic living costs, including rent, food, and utilities. Some 62% of personal bankruptcies in the US are linked to illness and health care costs."

In this week's livestream we'll be speaking with Hannah Appel professor of economic anthropology at UCLA and part of the Debt Collective, and one of the co-authors of "Can't Pay Won't Pay".
From here bio:
"How can we expand the field of economic possibility in an interconnected, power-laden world? I am also fundamentally committed to ethnographic research as a vibrant method for asking new questions and formulating new answers about the world in which we live. "

Ben Burgis is a philosophy professor, a logic nerd, a columnist for Jacobin, and the author of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left. This conversation on the podcast came out of a twitter battle Burgis and I engaged in on the topic of the State Capitalist theory and the question of whether the Soviet Union was State Capitalist. This is the second half of a two-part conversation.
This week’s podcast is available for everyone. Our patrons get access to two podcasts every week: Symptomatic Redness and Zero Squared, but if you’re listening on our free feed you’ll always be able to access one or the other podcasts each week. Patrons also receive access to our new video series called The History of Communism and get access to the Capital Reading group. Book Club members receive electronic copies of new Zero Book titles every month and are invited to an online discussion group.

Zer0 Books is proud to present the release of 'Ugly Beauty: Jazz in the 21st Century', a book by Phil Freeman.
What does jazz “mean” 20 years into the 21st century? Has streaming culture rendered music literally meaningless, thanks to the removal of all context beyond the playlist? Are there any traditions left to explore? Has the destruction of the apprenticeship model (young musicians learning from their elders) changed the music irrevocably? Are any sounds off limits? How far out can you go and still call it “jazz”? Or should the term be retired?
These questions, and many more, are answered in Ugly Beauty, as Phil Freeman digs through his own experiences and conversations with present-day players. Jazz has never seemed as vital as it does right now, and has a genuine role to play in 21st-century culture, particularly in the US and the UK.
Stewart Smith (interviewer) is a music writer and academic with a particular interest in jazz and improvised music. A regular contributor to The Wire, Bandcamp Daily, The Quietus and Tribune, he also presents Jazz Police and Radical Scotland on Repeater Radio. He recently curated Jazz At The Third Eye, an archival project exploring the legacy of Glasgow’s pioneering multi-arts space.
