One person was killed and over a dozen seriously injured when a vehicle plowed through a large crowd of protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12. Heather Heyer, 32, was declared deceased shortly after a Dodge Challenger driven by James Alex Fields Jr., 20, sped down a narrow roadway and collided with two other vehicles in the middle of an intersection.
Civilian medics attempted to perform CPR on Heyer, who was bleeding heavily on the roadside near the crash site. Dozens of injured protesters fled up the street, many with gashes and bruises, making desperate pleas to police for help. Multiple ambulances took the injured to a nearby hospital, including an unresponsive Heyer. Charlottesville's mayor later announced she had been declared deceased upon arrival at hospital.
Three people would ultimately loose their lives that day in two loosely connected incidents. Two Virginia State Police troopers were killed when their helicopter crashed near a golf course on the outskirts of Charlottesville later on that day. They had been assisting in law enforcement surveillance of the "Unite the Right" rally and the violence that followed.
