Was There A Big Bang? A chat with Simons Observatory National Society of Black Physicists Scholars
#multiverse #karlPopper #cosmology This talk to the inaugural class of Simons Observatory-NSBP Scholars (SNSP) was a play on my late UC San Diego colleague Geoff Burbidge’s talk of the same name in the early 1990s. I discuss the progress in cosmology since that lecture with an eye towards the controversy that is raging in the field of cosmology: is ours a single Universe or merely a pinprick in the Multiverse? Have there been multiple big bangs, separated either in time (Penrose’s conformal cyclic cosmological model, Turok-Steinhardt's Ekpyrotic bouncing cosmology) or space (Everett’s Many Worlds Hypothesis)?
Perhaps there is really a preponderance of evidence that inflation, and its concomitant multiverse, took place. How do we appraise the claims of these fanciful models, bearing in mind the dominant schema for doing so: Karl Popper's demarcation scientific philosophy. Karl Popper saw demarcation as a central problem in the philosophy of science. Popper articulates the problem of demarcation as The problem of finding a criterion which would enable us to distinguish between the empirical sciences on the one hand, and mathematics and logic as well as 'metaphysical' systems on the other, I call the problem of demarcation."
