NEW HOPE, Minn. A fire at a New Hope apartment complex Sunday morning left dozens of people without homes.
First responders had to evacuate the building, and rushed one person n to the hospital, according to a news release from the West Metro Fire-Rescue District.
Fire Chief Sarah Larson said firefighters arrived at the scene near Boone Avenue North and Bass Lake Road around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. They saw smoke and fire coming from the first floor. It quickly spread to the second and third-floor balconies.
Some families at the Pheasant Park Apartments woke up to smoke and flames. Others, like Anthony Robinson, weren’t home at the time.
"When I came here, my whole apartment was engulfed in flames. I've just paid off everything almost. I lost everything," Robinson told Fox 9.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross are supporting the families during this difficult time.
"It's a lot more than just a fire. It's people's livelihoods," said Jacob Ladenthin, disaster program manager for the American Red Cross.
Ladenthin said the Red Cross provided blankets, worked with Metro Transit to bring some warm buses to provide shelter for residents and worked with the Salvation Army to provide food and other supplies. They’re assisting about 30 people who lived in the right wing of the building. He said families in the other wing can stay in their homes.
Despite losing everything, Robinson said he does have a reason to feel thankful: His cat, Precious, made it out alive.
"My cat was in there, and thank God through all of that the cat made it," he said. "As long as I got her I got her -- 12 years I've had her -- so long as I got her -- she's OK."
Ladenthin said the Red Cross may open a temporary shelter at a local church if enough families need a place to stay.
Firefighters are still investigating the fire. Larson said early indications are that it started by accident.

Saint Paul police officer involved in shooting early Saturday morning
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating after a Saint Paul police officer was involved in a shooting during the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 6.
At approximately 12:18 a.m., Saint Paul police officers were called to a multi-unit building on the 400 block of Thomas Avenue West for an in-progress sexual assault. The 911 caller stated that a man was physically and sexually assaulting a woman while armed with a handgun. The caller stated that he could hear the woman screaming. Â
According to preliminary information, as our officers arrived, they witnessed a man trying to exit the building through a back window. The officers outside the building observed the man going back inside through the same window. Two officers inside the building were at the apartment door. They were able to get the woman to safely exit the apartment. The officers then began to call the suspect out of the apartment, into the hallway. He charged out of the apartment at them, and shots were fired by one officer, which struck the man in the arm. Â Officers called for Saint Paul Fire medics to respond and began to provide first aid to the man.
The injured man was transported to Regions Hospital by medics with non-life-threatening injuries. The woman involved was not injured in the shooting.
Due to the nature of this incident, we requested the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to handle the investigation. The officers involved in this incident were wearing body cameras that were activated. The BCA will review the video and other evidence as part of its investigation.
The officers will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting. No further information about this case is currently available. Future questions about the investigation should be directed to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
