Beauchief Abbey in Sheffield - A Short History of the Abbey and Walk Around the Grounds - March 2021. Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe for weekly history and travel videos. ?? https://www.beauchiefabbey.org.uk/ Beauchief Abbey is a small Premonstratensian house founded around 1176. The building that remains today, is much newer. However, the foundations of the original monastic buildings remain which provide a good illustration of the layout of this type of monastery. There are also further buried remains in Beauchief Park. Premonstratensian monasteries housed white canons. They were called this due to the light colour of their robes, as opposed to Benedictines who wore black robes and were also called black monks. White canons were not strictly monks, rather a group of priests that resided together under a rule (austerity and seclusion). Due to this, most Premonstratensian monasteries were in rural locations. Beauchief Abbey was founded in thanks to a gift of land by Robert FitzRanulph, Lord of Alfreton and served as a daughter establishment of Welbeck Abbey. When Henry VIII suppressed the monasteries (Dissolution of the Monasteries) in 1536, Beauchief Abbey was surrendered to Thomas Cromwell’s commissioners. In 1648, the Abbey and land were purchased by Sir Nicholas Strelley, then Lord of Ecclesall for £223. Like most monasteries, following the dissolution, they were stripped and their interiors and stone sold. Often, they were left to fall into ruin. Some of the stone from Beauchief Abbey was used to build Beauchief Hall around 1667. In the late 1670s, the nave of the church and the tower was at least partially restored to make a chapel for the landowner, Edward Pegge. After the death of Edward Pegge in 1679, the estate remained in the ownership of the family, by direct descent, until the death of Edward’s great-grandson Peter in 1836. There are rumours of a secret underground passage that runs from the abbey to Norton Church. However, the archaeological excavations in the 1920s did not uncover anything. Coincidentally, there are secret passages at Welbeck Abbey. However, these were put in by the Duke of Newcastle in 1623. A quick look around Elsecar Heritage Center in Barnsley. Elsecar New Colliery was sunk in 1795 and an Ironworks had also been established. Ironstone was locally mined locally. The colliery at Elsecar was much deeper than other mines in the area, therefore a Newcomen Beam Engine was built to extract water from the mine, allowing the exploration of deeper coal seams. The Engine ran from 1795 to 1923 when it was replaced with electric pumps. The beam is still intact and can be seen towards the end of the video. The Elsecar Steam Railway also remains, it used to serve Earl Fitzwilliam’s collieries and ironworks. The railway now operates on a one-mile section of the branch, using historic steam and diesel locomotives. The workshops were built in 1850 to facilitate more effective management of the various industrial enterprises around the estate. In 1986 many of the buildings were listed to be of special architectural or historic interest.
