Someone asked me what my take on Kriya Yoga is. In short, I believe it's a powerful and beneficial practice. However, according to various Shastra, Apta, and Atma Pramanas (Scriptural references) it is a practice that is NOT necessary (nor as beneficial) if you were to follow the guidance of your guru. For those that are followers of Paramahamsa Yogananda, Kriya Yoga IS the technique that their Guru has given them, and therefore is the 'right' form of Yoga to be practiced. For followers of Nithyananda, such as myself, He provides a number of other techniques, including specific pranayamas that are to be performed during His Prathama Vinyasa Krama (108 asana sequence), and thus, Kriya Yoga is not practice by His disciples. Many Masters teach various different techniques, and there are many Hindu scriptures that seem to directly contradict one another. None are 'wrong', none are 'right', all perfect for the individual seeker! For those interested in learning about the benefits of using a traditional langoti and how to tie one for yourself - the perfect (ENGLISH) tutorial video is finally here! It may look like a diaper at first sight.. but this traditional attire was a popular cloth in the Vedic lifestyle for many reasons. In Vedic times it was common to see sportsmen, wrestlers and yogis wear the langot while performing various activities for it's ease of use, ability to support the hips and protection it provides for the groin - this is why we use the langoti when practicing on the pole! Shivastambha is a dynamic form of yoga that requires a few things from your lower body: free range of motion with your groin, hips and skin-to-pole contact with your thighs. Short shorts might seem like the easy solution, but what they don't offer is the safety and protection that a langoti can provide for 'your boys'. This is why the langoti is used when we practice Nithyananda Shivastambha Yoga.
