Here are all of the practical cooking techniques you will need when making a French Onion soup.
Key techniques from this video:
1. The onions turn brown because they are full of sugar. When you cook sugar, it becomes sweeter; which is why this soup is a bowl of sweet and savoury deliciousness.
2. Spanish onions are the ideal onion for this soup because it contains the most amount sugar out of all of the onions in the onion world. More sugar means sweeter flavour.
3. Slicing the onions from pole-to-pole (top to the root), matters because of onion structure. Cutting it this way will help the slices retain their bite after they have been cooked. Cutting them the other way will cause them to turn to mush when they are cooked.
I will be trying to push out weekly videos with a focus on practical cooking techniques that will equip any novice cook with the skills they will need in the kitchen.
