Penrose vs. Weinstein: Do We Need Quantum Gravity?

Are singularities real? Or are we just fooling ourselves? And if they’re not real, why do we need a theory of quantum gravity? Three years ago, I had the privilege of discussing this with two of my favorite people – Sir Rogen Penrose and Eric Weinstein! Here’s a clip from the encounter. Enjoy!

Brandon Hensley discusses his recent paper titled 'The origin of parity violation in polarized dust emission and implications for cosmic birefringence". This paper motivates observed non-zero TB correlations from polarized dust emission as being caused by magnetically misaligned filamentary dust structures, which should also then produce non-zero EB and EEBB signals. This has important ramifications for searches that assume these quantities are zero when looking for cosmic birefringence, which is particularly relevant to some research done in our field the recent claim based on PLANCK data by Minami and E. Komatsu, “New extraction of the cosmic birefringence from the Planck 2018 polarization data,” Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 221301 (2020). https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.125.221301

David Perell is a modern philosopher-scholar. He is a Gen-Z version of Seth Godin who both writes and thinks in public to become a more refined intellectual. He is a brilliant raconteur who also partners with Tiago Forte to produce the spectacular "Building a Second Brain" course!
David's motto is: “Write every day.” Most of his essays are about business, education, and what it means to be a citizen of the Internet. These essays are a record of his intellectual quest to make sense of the world. They’re the diary of his contemplative life, and you will enjoy them. Start with the short-form essays and work your way up to the long-form ones. https://perell.com/
David's most popular short articles include The Price of Discipline, The Never-Ending Now, and One Big Idea. And if you want to read some long-form essays, I recommend What the Hell is Going On, News in the Age of Abundance, and Peter Thiel’s Religion. Or, if you want a short introduction to my thinking, you’ll like 50 Ideas that Changed My Life.If you want to see all his writing on a single page, you’ll find all my essays here At https://perell.com/about/
In Write of Passage, you will develop a systematic process for cultivating ideas, distilling them into writing, and sharing them with the people who can make the biggest difference in your career.By the time you finish the course, you will have published a series of insightful articles, built a professional website, launched an email newsletter, learned how to use these assets to connect with anyone on the planet, and developed a framework for uniquely framing your expertise and skills. You’ll transform from a passive consumer to an active creator, and escape the “Mediocre Majority” of people who endlessly consume without ever producing. The content you produce will become an asset that you own. It will work for you 24/7, and become a magnet for like-minded people, interesting ideas, and career opportunities.

How many brilliant ideas have you had and forgotten? How many insights have you failed to take action on? How much useful advice have you slowly forgotten as the years have passed? We feel a constant pressure to be learning, improving ourselves, and making progress. The solution: Build a Second Brain! https://www.buildingasecondbrain.com/

What would a modern-day 'Voyage of the Beagle ' be like? Cambridge zoologist Arik Kershenbaum evokes Charles Darwin's travels in a trip not confined to the earth's confines. Come along with us on a journey of discovery through the entire galaxy where we encounter aliens and their planets with supersonic creatures, a moon where aliens have a language composed of smells, and aliens who scream with fear, act honestly and have technology. The Zoologist's Guide to the Galaxy answers these questions using the latest science to tell the story of how life really works, on Earth and in space.
This is a wildly fun and scientifically sound exploration of what alien life must be like, using universal laws that govern life on Earth and in space.
Scientists are confident that life exists elsewhere in the universe. Yet rather than taking a realistic approach to what aliens might be like, we imagine that life on other planets is the stuff of science fiction. The time has come to abandon our fantasies of space invaders and movie monsters and place our expectations on solid scientific footing.
But short of aliens landing in New York City, how do we know what they are like? Using his own expert understanding of life on Earth and Darwin's theory of evolution - which applies throughout the universe - Cambridge zoologist Dr. Arik Kershenbaum explains what alien life must be like: how these creatures will move, socialize, and communicate. For example, by observing fish whose electrical pulses indicate social status, we can see that other planets might allow for communication by electricity. As there was evolutionary pressure to wriggle along a seafloor, Earthling animals tend to have left/right symmetry; on planets where creatures evolved in midair or in soupy tar, they might be lacking any symmetry at all.
Topics discussed:
Why natural selection is both a universal and predictable process, the existence and results of which are likely to be present on alien planets.
What are Animals and What are Aliens?
Examines the definition of animals, from the historical definitions derived from observation (e.g. Aristotle), to modern phylogenetic relationships. The book argues that a purely phylogenetic definition of what is an animal cannot be sufficient for classifying alien life.
Movement – Scuttling and Gliding Across Space
How the constraints of physics and mechanics combined with evolutionary laws to produce the movement strategies we see on Earth, and why many of these strategies (e.g. legs) are likely to exist on other planets too.
Communication Channels
The different ways that animals communicate: sound, vision, smell, and what might lead these same channels to be used by alien life to communicate.
Intelligence
How different forms of intelligence evolved on Earth,

What if I told you that you could be more productive… by doing less?
Sounds crazy, but as per today’s extraordinary guest, it’s true! Meet Cal Newport, associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University and bestselling author of Deep Work, Digital Minimalism, and other books that offer a refreshing departure from the hustle culture that pervades modern society.
Instead of advocating for endless multitasking and shallow engagement, Newport champions the art of deep work – the ability to focus intensely on cognitively demanding tasks, producing results that are not only profound but also deeply satisfying.
Today, he presents his newest book, Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout.
Join us as we explore the potential beyond the constant hustle and bustle of modern life and discover what you can accomplish by doing not more but fewer things!
