in this documentary we take an unbiased look at socialism and capitalism plus we touch upon fascism a little. from the coal miners of England at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to The Tolpuddle Martyrs and from The great Ukrainian famine to the killing fields.
The Industrial Revolution changed the nature of capitalism from merchants selling handcrafted work by artisans to industrialists selling mass produced items made in factories, the fuel driving this change was coal. in Britain, the birth place of the Industrial Revolution coal mining was one of the worse jobs anyone could imagine, at the start of the Industrial Revolution a coal miners day would start with his commute to work, then up to an hours craw down a tiny, dirty tunnel to reach the place he would be working for the day, then after many hours of back breaking working he would have to craw another hour to get out of the mine. Many miners died young due to roof collapses, explosions and the many respiratory illnesses that came along with job. sadly The coal miners problems didn’t end there, the owners on the mines would pay them for how much quality coal they had mined and many of the mine owners would rig the scales or claim the coal was low quality in order to not give them a fair price, the mine owners would also pay them in tokens that could only be spent in shops that the mine owner ran and changed very high prices for food and goods, it was also fairly common for the mine owners to own the homes of the miners and charge them more rent than the miners would make to always keep them in debt. With capitalism running rampant in 1834 six agricultural labourers from the village of Tolpuddle in Dorset were convicted of swearing a secret oath as members of the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers. With the French Revolution still ringing in the ears of the European governments and the swing riots of 1830 still fresh in the mind of the British government the six men were sentenced to penal transportation to Australia. The men were sent to Australia and set to work on farms. Back in England protests and petitions were so strong that the men were pardoned and returned to England. The Tolpuddle Martyrs are seen by many socialist as heroes that kick started the trade unions.
The ideas of Socialism when fully embraced have been problematic to say the least, up to 100 million people died in communist china alone and it could be said that Socialism has coursed more human death and suffering than another ideology in history. The great Ukrainian famine between 1932 and 1933 killed up to 7 million people in what can only be described as hell on earth. The communist soviet union lead by Joseph Stalin had killed all of the productive farmers in Ukraine and replaced them with people that didn’t know how to work the land. The result was under production of the food needed to feed the people and to compound matters statin used this as a way to eliminate the Ukrainian independence movement by staving the people to keep them weak. In this time the people of Ukraine were so hungry that posters had to be printed to remind them that eating their children was barbaric and more than 2500 people were convicted of cannibalism. Similar things can be seen where ever socialist ideas take hold from zimbabwe to china to North Korea to ethiopia famine and death follow Socialism when mixed with the ideas of Karl Marx. In 1975 the communist Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia by inciting the rural farmers against the city folk, the result is what is known as the killing fields where up to 3 millions people were murdered because of their ethnicity, religion or social standing. this and many other examples show the dangers of invoking tribalism and collectivism to condemn one group and give another group the power of life and death without consequences.
It is important to remember that most of human history has been full of slavery and oppression so the wage labour of Capitalism is a step up from this and most poor people in developed countries live better than the richest kings of old. Capitalism produces plenty but a byproduct of that plenty is a population that is to detracted by consumerism to realise how good they have it. modern day Capitalism has come closer to creating the utopia than anything else in history yet depression, anxiety obesity and heart disease are at an all time high so maybe we should stop pushing for the utopia and learn to live a more natural life.

Clive Wearing was a successful musician and conductor, at the height of his career with BBC Radio 3 aged 46 Clive contracted a form of herpes that attacked his Central nervous system leaving him with a severe form of amnesia. Clive forgot most of his life, including his children’s names. He was also left with a complete inability to form lasting new memories and would forget what he was doing every 30 seconds, as his consciousness would reset every 30 seconds he would spent most of every day waking up trying to understand what was happening only to reawaken 30 seconds later in a never ending cycle of confusion. Clive was encouraged to record his thoughts by his carer and his diary reads like a frustrating circle of hell in which he wakes up with no memory of being awake just 30 seconds before. Page after page of him telling himself that he is now more awake than he was just 30 seconds beforehand. Interestingly Clive could clearly remember the love he had for his wife and how to play the piano. this is the most extereme case of memory loss
