Italy Ends Censorship of Films on Moral and Religious Grounds
Since the dawn of cinema in 1914, Italy's censorship law has banned many artistic works. In a survey by Cinecensura, an online exhibition promoted by the culture ministry, more than 700 movies have been censured since 1944 primarily for political, moral, and religious reasons. On April 5th, culture minister Dario Franceschini announced that censorship has been abolished. It will not be possible to prevent the publicity of a new movie or demand modifications for moral or religious reasons. Filmmakers will classify movies based on the age of the audience. A new commission, made up of members from the film industry and experts in education and animal rights, will verify their decisions. The last major case of censorship was against the movie "Toto Who Lived Twice" in 1998. Traditional Catholics criticized the film as they found it blasphemous and grotesque.

On July 6th, Bradford Labour MP (UK), Naz Shah, delivered a passionate speech in Parliament during a discussion for the Police, Crime, Sentencing, and Courts (PCSC) Bill. In her remarks, she has directly compared the “emotional harm” of the cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad and the destruction of memorials. The speech comes as Britain is still in a tense situation over a teacher who is in hiding after showing school children cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Different news outlets in Britain were calling Shah’s speech a call for the return of blasphemy laws. Legislation on “emotional harm” can be a bit convoluted, as Shah failed to acknowledge the critical distinction in her speech because vandalism of memorials is a concrete criminal action. ? Lars Gardfeldt, a 56-year old priest of the Church of Sweden, recently announced his plans to use “conscientious objection” to justify his refusal to marry opposite-sex couples. Gardfeldt is an openly gay priest from Karl Johan Parish in Gothenburg, Sweden. He intends to make his point heard by demonstrating "the absurdity of refusing marriage to two consenting adults." He will be using the same method that other priests use to deny marriage to same-sex couples. Although the Church of Sweden has been offering religious blessings for same-sex couples who wish to be married, homophobic culture still permeates the church and its ranks. The ability for the priests of the Church of Sweden to conscientiously object to a marriage that they morally oppose has become the primary means of exercising that homophobia. CCTV footage shows that the man with the weapon was following Father Francis D’Souza. The perpetrator eventually fled the scene, unable to get close enough to the Father. On the same day, members of the Christian community in Srinivaspur town of Kolar district were reportedly going door-to-door to distribute some religious texts, described by some news agencies as Christmas cards, when members of right-wing Hindu groups protested and set the texts ablaze. These incidents come a day before the state Assembly meets for the Winter Session in Belagavi. A controversial anti-conversion bill is tabled to be discussed this session, with a likelihood of it being passed. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stated that the government will not let Churches misuse someone’s poverty to lure them into converting to Christianity. ?
