Bathroom Renovations Part 6 The End
Finally this series has come to an end and the shower is ready for use, making my wife very happy indeed!
The step leading into the shower is basically made of two 2x4's. They are covered with cement board which is painted with the latex vapour barrier. The step slopes forward slightly to allow water to drain. I should have made the slope more prominent since water does not drain well enough.
To ensure that the shower is as water proof as possible I used a synthetic tile grout. It is an epoxy based product and therefore you have to mix a hardener with the grout. Unlike regular tile grout this makes the final product non porous. The product I used is made by Mapei. It is relatively expensive compared to the regular grout. It also hardens quicker so you have to work fast with the product. It is definitely worth the extra effort! The step leading into the shower in my opinion has to be as waterproof as possible. The step is always wet! This was another reason why I used synthetic grout.
At the joint between the base and the tiles I sealed it with silicone. Since I'm not an expert at its applying I used an old trick a friend taught me. I put a line of masking tape on the tile and one on the base. The distance between them is the thickness of my silicone strip. After applying the silicone I bevel it using my thumb. Then I remove the tape and wait for the silicone to harden (24hrs).
I purchased a Pulse Showerspa showerhead from Costco (model Aqua Rain I believe it was). After a short time however, the valve which diverts the water coming from the top or from the handheld stopped working. The company send me a replacement but just the fact that it was defective upset me. Also one of the joints always leaks.
Just as a reminder: I purchased the shower kit at Costco. It is made by OVE and it includes the base, the glass panes and handles.
This concludes this construction project. Thank you for watching, Tony the Turtle
