It's been said that the polar pattern of a microphone is nothing more than a name to give you an idea of how that microphone should sound. In reality, one cardioid microphone could sound more like another manufacturer's supercardioid and another's hypercardioid. This is because listening is a unique experience to you and you alone. Sure, you may be able to identify many of the same microphone characteristics as others but they could hear the same sounds differently than you also. It's all a matter of perspective. The best way to learn how a microphone sounds is to get that microphone and listen to it. If that's not an option you can look online for a spec sheet to give you an impression of how it could sound but there's a lot that a spec sheet can't tell you. Fortunately, you can see on a spec sheet a chart that will help you find where your microphone is and isn't sensative. To professionals that record with microphones, this is a critical thing to know. Although many people look at price tags to get an idea of the quality of a product, you can't do that with the Deity S-mic 2. Not only did this microphone impress me, I can't think of another mic under $50 I like better. Not bad for a house brand microphone of a sound store. The t.bone SC400 is a flat microphone with a very high boost to give it a slightly more open sound. Seldom seen on most microphones muchless inexpensive mics is a low amount of smoothing on frequency response chart. It also sports a very low self noise while maintaining a good max SPL and sensitivity. It does lack roll off switches and pads but many flat microphones and entry level mics do too. I do believe this is a microphone you should hear for yourself. Better yet, let's compare it to a few other microphones you know.
