In this episode Shahriar repairs an Agilent 54845A oscilloscope with an intermittent failure. The instrument occasionally fails self-calibration and the displayed waveform shows undesired spurious activities. The teardown of the instrument reveals customized front-end section coupled into a ceramic-substrate ADC ASIC designed by Agilent. The packaged ADCs are placed in sockets. The ICs are removed and the ceramic carrier is cleaned; this resolves the intermittent problem with the channels. The architecture of the scope is also presented. The functionality of the scope is verified through self-calibration, self-test and measurement of various waveform.

In this episode Shahriar takes a close look at a faulty Agilent E4433B 4.0GHz signal generator and vector modulator. This instrument is equipped with many of the most useful options such as dual arbitrary waveform generator and high-power output.
The instrument does not generate any error messages, however the output signal is ~20dB below specifications. After presenting the system block diagram and observing the output power characteristics, it becomes clear that the issue is with the mechanical attenuator. The teardown of the attenuator reveals faulty o-rings on the 5dB attenuation pad which has to be repaired with some flexible epoxy.
After the repair the instrument’s functionality is verified by measuring the output power with a power meter, frequency accuracy with a Rubidium frequency counter and the modulation accuracy with a vector signal analyzer.

In this episode Shahriar repairs a faulty Agilent 3458A. These highly desirable multimeters have continued to climb in price in the past few years. The last time The Signal Path has repaired one of these units was back in 2018.
This instrument generates several errors both during power up as well as Auto Cal procedure. The error points to a failure in the OHMS measurement mode. Detailed instrument block diagram and schematics are examined. Measurements also show incorrect DC current sourcing during OHMS measurements and the associated circuits are closely analyzed. The problem is traced to a quad-comparator IC. Replacement corrects all problems during ACAL. The battery backup of the SRAM ICs are also replaced to eliminate non-volatile errors. The IC of the comparator chip is also extracted and examined under the microscope.
The repaired instrument performance is verified by using voltage, current and resistance standards.
