„It was a HUGE joy being among these outstanding guys (and gal): Baptiste Cathelin, Antoine Duchêne, Juan J. Ochoa and Lente Verelst as one of the five finalists out of 304 participants from 44 countries without age limit! I was also extremely surprised when we were told that the level of quality of this edition was the highest since the start of the competition, 7 years ago! So all the selected compositions were extremely good and very close in terms of quality! So it was really difficult for the jury to select the 5 finalists!
I've never been in a competition with such a high level of music professionalism AND musical finesse! After the 1st rehearsal I realised how lucky and proud I should be to have been chosen amongst them! It was incredible to watch the same short film ("Happiness" by Steve Cutts) with 5 different (but convincing) musical approaches. The way the tone of the short film changed due to the different musical strategies proved once again the overwhelming power and influence that the music has on a movie.
I had a lot to learn from my fellow colleagues (I hardly wait to share our scores to each other!!), from the conversations with the jury (Cliff Martinez, Frank Strobel, Christine Aufderhaar and Sabine Gisiger) from the experience of being part of the wonderful ZURICH FILM FESTIVAL, from working with one of the best orchestras in the entire world - the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the list can go on!!
On the 4th of October I was announced as the winner of the competition. It was overwhelming because I knew how good the other pieces were and how tough the decision of the jury must have been! This prize comes with a great responsibility built on the trust that the jury invested in me but it also comes as a confirmation of being on the right track! There is much to do, to improve on and to explore and I can't wait to see what's next!”

The title of the piece "0.K." carries multiple meanings, each adding layers of complexity and irony. From "zero knowledge," a technical term in cryptography, to the absolute temperature of "0 degrees Kelvin," and the omnipresent use of the expression "ok." There's also a popular but mistaken interpretation that suggests "ok" originates from "0 killed," meaning no casualties in a conflict. These meanings intertwine, confront each other, and dissolve reciprocally without losing their initial significance. Thus, the concept of stasis and inertia, suggested by 0 Kelvin, gets contaminated with ideas of confidentiality and complexity from cryptography, turning into a riddle of "secretiveness."
The piece "0.K." is an invitation to deep reflection, aware of the potential initial impression of triviality or superficiality. However, at its heart, the piece deeply probes the themes of excess, disorder, chaos, and division. It compels us to reflect on our existence and the consequences of our actions. Key questions surface throughout: What have we sacrificed? What values have we abandoned in our pursuit of trivial goals, even to the extent of causing harm to others? Where can we find true meaning? What place does the sacred hold in our lives today? Understanding these questions is crucial to fully appreciating both the composition and the experience it offers to listeners.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Marin Cazacu, who commissioned this piece, setting the stage for its creation. Gratitude is also due to Dmitry Matvienko, the remarkable conductor whose talent and vision brought the composition to life. Last but not least, my appreciation goes out to the orchestra, whose skilled musicians tackled and masterfully performed this challenging piece of music. Their dedication and expertise were instrumental in realizing the full potential of the work.
