On this show: Why iPhone 15 doesn’t fast charge Disappointing benchmarks and why they could get worse, BMWs killing iPhone 15 NFC chips BendGate 2.0 and Stock problems…
@AzizRahman1 • 9 days ago (edited) #iCaveAnswers why don't the new iPhones have fast charging?
@evanrodgers8487 #icaveanswers can you make sense of the A17 pro benchmarks for us? Seeing lots of poor quality analysis flying around the socials.
BMW & CarPlay.
@teamkinetixmedia #iCaveAnswers iPhone 15 has been in the wild for almost a week now. What are your thoughts on the claims that the A17 Pro chips are overheating, or that the 5x “120mm” lens on the 15 Pro Max is of lower quality than the 3x on the smaller Pro?
@teamkinetixmedia #iCaveAnswers thoughts on “bendgate 2023”? (iPhone 15 Pro being broken by hand)
@teamkinetixmedia #iCaveAmswers Why do you think there’s such a stock issue with the iPhone 15 Pro Max? Should it have been delayed? Were the production issue rumours true? Or did they just sell a whole lot of them at launch?

#iCaveAnswers I wanted to see Apple to include a feature where you will be able to broadcast your iPhone’s screen to your MacBook, like AirPlay. I heard that it may be coming in the future, and I hope it does, because the alternative I found is very inconvenient. Do you think that we will see such a feature coming in the near future (maybe this year’s WWDC for next MacOS version and iOS 15)?

#iCaveAnswers Hi David, I know this is a bit off topic from today's items, but a question it is. What is your opinion about smartphone companies increasing the battery sizes in their phones? Let's be honest, would many really complain if their "iPhone" etc was an extra 3 or 4mm thick. They could have the same battery as they put in now plus another layered one almost the whole size of their phone.

#iCaveAnswers What are your three most indispensable Mac utilities/ accessory apps? It might be nice to hear what other viewers’ ones are too.
In case you’re interested, mine are:
»BetterTouchTool- Greatly expands on Magic Mouse/ Trackpad functionality. Simply a must-have.
»iCollections- Similar to the old app DragThing, this provides additional docks.
»Typinator- My favourite text expansion tool. TextExpander or some tools in Alfred are also good options.

#iCaveAnswers Hi Dave, What are your thoughts on a new gen 3 Pencil for the A14X iPad Pro? Do you expect the new iPad Pro to work exclusively with the Gen. 3 Pencil (if there is one) or would you expect backward compatibility with the Gen. 2 Pencil? (if the rumours are true about there being a size difference) Keep up the good work. Jim (Bolton)

#iCaveAnswers Since we probably won’t see a touch screen Mac, do you think we will get something like an iPad Pro Max with a 27 inch screen with M1X processor on a swivel tilt mount like the Microsoft Surface Pro 7? Something suitable for an artist or illustrator or architect with a better Apple Pencil? Just holding out false hope.

Apple’s HomePod Mini and updated Apple TV’s are actually U1 chip toting UltraWide Band hubs to help you interact with your home
They will act as a part of a home security system that will alert you if your Apple devices are removed.
While the HomePod mini is all but confirmed, there have been less rumours about the Apple TV refresh at this event, but this may indicate that is coming too.
Beats own Apple Store page removed putting the focus on Apple branded products like AirPod and HomePod

Dongles. If you’ve ever used a reasonably modern MacBook, or thought about buying one and done a little research, you’ll have most likely realised that its USB-C city out there, a port that’s not compatible with anything.
Hyperbole I know, but listen to anyone with barely any experience on a Mac and they’ll tell you that using one is basically just carrying around a sack of adapters so you can connect anything from displays to hard drives, from SD Cards to Parallel port Dot Matrix printers. I mean damnit, its almost impossible to find a Mac that will natively use a floppy disk these days.
But you know, its possible to just keep one thing in your bag and get pretty much all the functionality you need. Something like the 6 in 1 hub that Lemorele sent me to take a look at.
I’m iCaveDave
I do get it. People use MacBooks as their only computer pretty often, whether they’re at the desk at home or on the go, and since M1 was released last November, the amount of speed combined with pretty insane battery life has meant that even Apple’s cheapest MacBook Air is enough for the vast majority of users.
While here in the tech space many YouTubers complained that they could only run a single external display with an M1 MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, for many people the only time they ever connect to another display is if they need to present something at the office or a sales meeting, or maybe connecting to a TV to watch a movie on your Laptop.
Well this hub uses just a single USB-C Thunderbolt port on your Mac, splitting it out to an HDMI port that does support ultra 4k resolution, 3 USB-A 3.0 ports, and an SD Card/ TransFlash card reader (Which I think is just the name of the micro SD Card from a quick Google, who knew!).
As the M1 MacBooks at least all have a pair of those thunderbolt ports on the one side, you can still charge the Mac directly while using the hub, while a lot of hubs that plug in directly take up both ports, and while they allow pass through charging there have been issues with charging via hubs on M1 Macs. Its pretty much fixed now in MacOS, but the issue was pretty severe and resulted in a fair number of bricked laptops, so this side steps that issue entirely.
This also makes a great single connector solution for docking your MacBook at the desk, whether at home or the office. That one USB-C connector could connect you to desktop hard drives, maybe an external keyboard and mouse if you find those more comfortable, giving you a full desktop experience while you’re there and the ability to unplug and take your main machine with you when you’re on the

Everything we’re expecting at the #letloose #appleevent
With the event just over a week away, while #ipad seem to be the main event, what else could we see at Apple’s first May event in almost 25 years?
I’m iCaveDave and I simplify Apple so everything just works for you - and after we’ve talked about the event, there’s a bunch of audience questions, so stay tuned and drop yours in the comments with #icaveanswers
So rapid fire, At the event we’re expecting iPad Pro in 11 & 13” sizes with new OLED displays, M3 chips, landscape focused FaceTime cameras, and potentially some kind of Magsafe charging, my guess being iPhone style puck chargers over Mac style Magsafe. These could also be getting new, aluminium MacBook style keyboards replacing the current Magic Keyboard and Trackpad, possibly even adding function keys.
Then the iPad Air gets M2, Schrodinger’s MiniLED display in the 12.9” newer, more bigger model, with Ross Displayman saying it was coming, and then saying actually nah but maybe in Q4 something will get it - what now? Another new big iPad? I’m intrigued.
iPad Air will also get the landscape cameras and I’d expect Magsafe, but who knows and what I’d love to see would be FaceID replacing the TouchID power button. But I don’t think I’ve heard anyone else suggest that could happen, so don’t hold your breath.
Then, based on the release logo, maybe yet another Apple Pencil, because then they can have their own Steve Jobs 4 product grid. Why on earth are there so many? Who knows, but if they finally make use of the patent they have for a camera in the tip to sample colours from the real world, bring on Apple Pencil Ultra or whatever.
What else? Maybe a new iPhone colour - Spring is the time for it and it still just about counts - and finally for the event I could see Vision Pro getting an international rollout. We’re hearing that US sales have just fallen off a cliff, so release it overseas instead of cutting production to keep momentum and if nothing else have it in way more developers hands ahead of WWDC when we’ll be getting VisionOS 2.0.
Sadly I don’t think we’ll see any iPad base models or iPad mini updates, but we could get the iPad 9th gen with it’s lightning port discontinued, and maybe a price drop to $399 on the 10th gen? We can only dream.
Right, on to your questions!
@BradWendesPod
#iCaveAnswers no new iPads in 2023 was unusual, now we’re hearing rumours of a 12.9” iPad Air, potentially with the mini-LED display from the iPad Pro. Do you think the delay and lack of iPads last year was to wait for new iPad Pro to have OLED before bringing mini-LED to the iPad Air?
@Evan_Rodgers
#icavediscussion I know you are a big fan of the M1 Mac mini with no plans on upgrading soon. What would you need to see or be able to accomplish with a new computer in order to recommend upgrades for current M-Series Mac owners?
@teamkinetixmedia
#iCaveAnswers rumours are that iPadOS 18 will have a calculator.
How amazing is this calculator going to be after FOURTEEN YEARS in development‽
@robblincoln2152
#icaveanswers: Dave am I insane? I think Apple updates its chips and devices every year so that whenever people upgrade, they have the latest and greatest iteration of that device. Yet I hear grumbling that this is planned obsolescence by Apple. Seems to me the consumers benefit far more than they are “disadvantaged” by this policy.
@teamkinetixmedia
#iCaveAnswers Delta Emulator on iPhone looks great in a recent video by MaxTech. Retro Nintendo games on iPhone is very exciting.
The app isn’t available in the EU but is available in the UK. So:
1) is this a Brexit benefit?
2) does this suggest that the UK won’t get sideloading or alternate app stores?
@Pokemonscarlet18
#icaveanswers which AirPods do you own? Are you looking to upgrade anytime soon?
@Pokemonscarlet18
#icaveanswers will be the m4 MacBook Air 15 inch be a big upgrade in terms of efficiency and performance?? Or will be a minor one like m2 to m3?? What’s the timeline for Face ID on Mac?
@Pokemonscarlet18
#icaveanswers will we get an iPhone that’s over 7inches in the near future? I mean we’ll be at 6.9inch this year so it’s not that far off
@Pokemonscarlet18
#icaveanswers are you excited for the iPad Air 12.9inch? What would get you to upgrade to the new iPads? Will Vision Pro kill the iPad down the road?
@Pokemonscarlet18
#icaveanswers how far away is the new MacBook Pro redesign?? Will Apple be able to make it thinnner wile keeping slll the ports and battery life? I’d rather them keep the thickness but increase the battery life further what are your thoughts ?

Straight into our top story, how Tim Cook’s Apple made a secret deal with the Chinese government worth $275 Billion over 5 years. Are they now just government shills? Depends if you ask the comment section where you can leave your best conspiracy theories for me to mock later.
Turns out, its nothing quite so exciting, but that as Apple considers China a major market, no duh, Apple made deals to help the country with developing skills in their workforce, improving China’s technology profile and economy and various other deals. Much of this appears to have been negotiated directly by Tim Cook, while Apple was facing a number of new regulatory challenges in China back around 2016, ahead of the iPhone X launch.
We’re only hearing about this now because of the opaque way that both China and Apple operate, it wasn’t specifically designed to be kept secret but it was also not the kind of thing Apple would decide to release PR information about. It did however serve to protect things like Apple Pay and the App Store in China, of course helping Apple’s revenue in the country and potentially beyond.
Apple has of course invested Billion of dollars in China over the years in terms of manufacturing and distribution infrastructure which is also what has been able to deliver the incredible numbers of devices that Apple needs each year for iPhone launches specifically but also across its other categories. While there may be short initial delays in some iPhone models at launch, these are typically in the 1-2 week range and not into the months of shortages that were seen back in the iPhone 4 and 4S days, when the volumes in general were far smaller too. This is a testament to Tim Cook’s leadership and how impressive his operational and logisitcal planning has been over the years. There’s a good reason why Apple has been least affected by the global chip shortages, and that is how far out Apple books in their manufacturing capacity.
On that subject, while there were recent reports that Apple had cut iPhone production by around 10million units due to a lack of components from Texas Instruments and Broadcom, it seems that these shortages have now been resolved, with Apple increasing their iPhone orders by 30% for the start of 2022 - this could be however an indication of production beginning for

M1 has blown minds for performance and battery, but what about M1X and M2?
M1 has the same CPU cores as in your iPhone 12, 4 efficiency cores but 4 performance cores instead of 2 in iPhone 12.
Well, M1X is the powerhouse and will at least double that to 8 performance cores, maybe more, and power the MacBook Pro’s new design and Apple Silicon iMacs too, also doubling the GPU Cores
Then at the end of the year, M2 arrives - with the faster next generation iPhone’s cores for the next generation of power efficient Macs.
So if you’re after fast and efficient with long battery, Go M1 or M2, if you need ALL the performance, X series Apple Silicon chips all the way!

I was a huge fan of RTS games as a kid and first played the original Command & Conquer demo from a cover CD on a magazine probably in 1995. I was immediately hooked and it was my favourite genre throughout my childhood.
Fast forward to 2020 and EA has released the original remastered game but only for PC - so can you play a fun Real Time Strategy game on iPad? The answer is yes. MechCom 3 is super fun and costs 99p - the same as a can of Monster Energy. That seems like a pretty good deal for a touch based RTS game that you can pick up whenever you feel like it.
