In this video, I share my admiration of wasps and the amazing benefits for our food forests and vegetable gardens when the bees are gone. Many folks think of us as bee stewards however we are nature stewards where we strive to learn, appreciate and support our ecosystems.
Leaf mulch and wood chips used for protection of over-winter potted plants
We use leaves that we collected in the fall from a nearby city for multiple purposes on the site. In this video I uncover the thornless blackberry tip rooted cuttings. They were overwintered and protected from the prolonged freezing temperatures with the insulation provided by the leaves and wood chips.
The added benefit of using this method is the fungal inoculation and worm colonization of the material including the potted plants.
It’s also late April and the black flies which breed in the spring is the cold flowing streams which we have plenty of on site.
As time permits and the weather cooperate, I will try and post videos of various activities that I'm involved in on the demonstration site. Hopefully this year I will be able to raise the greenhouse that I disassembled a few years ago.
If you have any questions or comments please leave them below and I will get to them as soon as I can. Thanks so much for watching please share and give this a thumbs-up if you think it's of value. Have a fantastic day!

Well, its fall, and the trees are going dormant so I need to get as many trees moved as possible. I'm reworking the 3rd food forest so that future management is easier. Water Managements of our property
I took some time to follow the path of the water on our permaculture demonstration site. I discussed the systems we use including seven man-made ponds, swales, canals and spillways. How we use and reuse the life giving water as it goes through the various components of our systems, which include two food forests, annual and perennial herb, vegetable, roots, vines, berry bushes, fruit and nut trees. We have extensive wildflower, pollen and nectar producing plants that provide habitats for beneficial insects and create microclimates.
I discuss bioremediation, mycoremediation, and phytoremediation and their function and design in our systems to remove contaminates and excess nutrients from our soil and water.
I also discussed problems I’ve experienced building ponds and a way have patched leaky ponds.
I also covered the strategy of the placing of thermophilic aerobic composting site in relation to water flow and mitigating pollution concerns.
I briefly discussed some soil creation techniques that we use on our demonstration site that uses waste materials from off site and creates excellent organic soil.

I recorded this video using a new handheld smartphone holding device which is the DJI - Osmo Mobile Gimbal Stabilizer. This unit turns my smartphone into a smart motion camera and uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with my phone. Amazing how well it smooths out the motion despite my jerky actions. I decided I really wanted to try and improve the quality of my YouTube videos. I chose the DJI unit because I love the DJI phantom 4 that I am still getting accustomed to.
I am putting an affiliate link below in case you are interested in purchasing either the phantom 4 or the DJI- Osmo. There are no additional charges to you; however I will receive a small commission if you purchase a unit. The commission will help me to continue to share more of the work we do.

In this video, we go on another tour of the garden plots. During these garden tours, I hope to document how things are progressing as well as concerns and issues that require investigation and possible changes. I hope these tours provide some of my thought processes as we examine the progress and problems detected, and I hope to inspire and share what we are learning throughout the season.

Greenhouse aluminum failure
In this video I review the failure I have experienced using a lightweight aluminum rolled material to cover and protect the Styrofoam insulation of the insulated concrete forms (ICFs). The chickens would peck and eat the insulation and the Styrofoam breaks down when exposed to UV light. The ground settled after backfilling the foundation exposing more of the buried aluminum and the high winds ripped off a lot of the aluminum on the west side of the building. In this video I replace the aluminum with pressure treated wood to protect the outer surface of the structure. I have not decided what to use to cover the interior surface of the insulation yet.
