When wireless radiation exposure limits were published by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1996, they were designed based on specific scenarios, including the assumption that only one source of radiation would be directed at the human body. But in the 21st century we're not exposed to just one source. Wi-Fi transmitters, antennas, devices, we are constantly bombarded. One typical school classroom might have dozens of radiation streams coming from dozens of transmitting antennas: 30 laptops, 30 cell phones, a wireless printer, a wireless security system, an overhead Internet access point, and why not a cell tower located in the line of sight outside of the window? 22.2 billion devices worldwide are going to be connected via Wi-Fi in 2021. Wi-Fi will be actively included in virtually every smart electronic device sold. Yet there was no premarket safety testing for long-term health effects and there is no post-market surveillance to track documented health effects. Further, the US is not gathering data on real-life exposures. Additionally, FCC radiation standards in 1996 were based on the thermal heating principle but 30 years later this principle is out of date and inapplicable. We now know that heating is not the only issue affecting the body. Studies show a negative impact on human health like headaches, sperm damage, and several types of cancer associated to electromagnetic radiation where no temperature change was measured. This Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), the measurement for these non-thermal readings, is an estimation of the power absorbed per unit of mass of exposed tissue, measured in watts per kilogram or milliwatts per gram. This is now the widely standard used to quantify the electromagnetic field (EMF) effects observed in tissues. In this Patreon event, electrical engineer and professor Sergio Racini shows where and how much these radiofrequency fields penetrate and are absorbed into the body. Work by Racini and the electrical engineering research teams of Claudio Fernandez and Alvaro De Salles at two universities in Brazil is critical to documenting the fact that human bodies absorb wireless radiation — and that children absorb proportionately more compared to adults. In 2015, they collaborated on a presentation showing how the absorption of wireless radiation from a laptop was dependent on the way the laptop was positioned near the body.
