Today I review a relatively decade old mic manufacturer’s only dynamic mic, The JZ Mic HH-1. This thing has a great build quality, does a superb job at off axis and rear rejection, and offers a crisp clean high end with a roll off in the bass to avoid muddiness or boominess. If you don’t like the lack of air or detail in the SM58, this is a great option for live vocals.

Today I review & sound test a budget lav mic that costs only $20!!! This thing seems to be universally compatible, and offers pretty nice audio for the price tag. If you are on a budget and looking for the best lav mic, then this may be a good contender.

Today I review an XLR Modeling Mic which allows you to get a U47, M49, ELAM 251, C12 tone, for a fraction of the costs of the microphones. The Sphere L22 is extremely versatile and seemed to work well on everything that I threw at it as it has a mic it’s modeling that fits most use cases, it has a low self noise of 7dBa, and it has great accessories. If you are not using the mic with universal audio interfaces, you will have to use a plugin in your daw and have to monitor that way so depending on your interface and computer, you may run into some latency issues. The mic will not get you the EXACT tone of these $10,000 microphones, but it’ll get you close enough that most people won’t be able to tell the difference.

Today I review one of the most popular broadcast dynamic microphones, the Electro Voice RE-20. Some people may think this thing is ugly, but it sounds pretty rad for spoken word. I found that the extended frequency response does make it more susceptible to sibilance and harshness, but it does provide added clarity.

Today I review the Shure Beta 57a, a supercardioid version of the classic SM57. The main difference between this and the 57 is the polar pattern, and will do a better job at background noise rejection. There are also tonal differences, with a slightly more aggressive low cut, and less boosted treble and air frequencies. If you want the classic 57 sound with minor tonal differences and better noise rejection, this is an essential mic.

Today I review the Behringer B-1 Large Diaphragm Condenser. This thing is boosted 10dB in the higher frequencies while the mids and lows are relatively flat. This gives the microphone a somewhat thinner, more sibilant sound. I think it may work well for singing in a mix, but it may be over boosted for many other applications.

I thought I would share how I mic up vocals, how I place the mic on my electric guitar, and how I mic up the acoustic guitar. This stems from the fact that someone thought I mic my acoustic up at 2.5 feet, which I don't. So hopefully this clears up any confusion about my microphone placement. Hopefully this we educational for you
