About the Guru - Sushmita Banerjee
Sushmita Banerjee is one of the most distinguished Kathak exponents in India. She started her talim at the tender age of four in the Lucknow Gharana and has matured into an artiste who has performed all over Europe, Africa, North America, South - East Asia and India. She has centers in Kolkata, Kerala and Geneva. She trained under Guru Pandit Ramnarayan Mishra, Shrimati Maya Chatterjee and Pandit Vijay Shankar. Sushmita has revived the Katha Shaili of Kathak under the tutelage of Birju Maharaj.
Sushmita has won many dance competitions and has received rave reviews from the media and contemporary artistes. She was amongst the few to secure distinction in Nritya Prabhakar Examination.
She has taken active part in many debates and talks held by The All India Radio, Kolkata.
At present she is a member of the Board of Judges of the Inter Collegiate Dance Competition organised every year by Calcutta University.
Besides being an excellent Kathak dancer, Sushmita after completing her graduation from Loreto College, Calcutta has majored in English Literature from Calcutta University. She is also an avid golfer.

Kathak
Kathak is one of the eight classical dance styles of India. It is a popular Indian Dance Form with a long history attached to its roots. Kathak is derived from Katha - Meaning Story & Kar - Meaning Doer. Kathakars or storytellers, would wander around places and during their journey, they would sing, dance and narrate legendary stories that later became a part of the Kathak Repertoire of Indian Classical Dance. The Lucknow Gharana of Kathak was founded by Ishwari Prasad, a devotee of the Bhakti movement. Ishwari lived in the village of Handiya situated in southeast Uttar Pradesh.
Other gharanas are the Jaipur Gharana and the Benaras Gharana. Recently, Jigyasa Giri has also come up with a new gharana and has coined it as the Dakshin Gharana. Kathak has intricate footworks and rhythmic patterns that draw the audience worldwide to watch this Indian traditional dance form.
Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt Achchan Maharaj, Saswati Sen, Jigyasa Giri, Roshan Kumari, Maya Rao are some of the popular Kathak dance artists.

DAY 1
We begin the Nataraja Festival 2022 with a passionate Bharatanatyam dancer, Tanya Saxena from Delhi. Tanya started her training under Padma Bhushan Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan and Rama Vaidyanathan. Tanya is an empanelled artist of the ICCR, an A-Grade Doordarshan graded artist and a recipient of the Ministry of Culture Scholarship for Young Artists. She holds a Master’s in Performing Arts from Tamil Nadu University and is currently under the joint mentorship of A. Lakshmanaswamy and Kamalini Dutt.
She has presented over 150 performances at stages across the world. Some notable shows include at the Spirit of Youth Festival at the Music Academy, Chennai; Kamani Auditorium, Delhi and the Calderon Theatre, Spain. Tanya has collaborated with artists to create inter-disciplinary work, including Yami - a dance theatre production staged at Sangeet Natak Akademi, Thrissur and Les Flutes Enchantes - a collaboration with Hindustani and Western flautists commissioned by Alliance Francaise, Delhi. She has toured the US, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico and Spain.

She played the role of krishna and Vamana in the prestigious project 'Sree Harikoluvu' - All Mighty Trinity on Sree Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birthday, composed and choreographed by Smt.Smitha Madhav. She has also performed at the National dance festival at Maamallapuram the Natyanjali Festivals in Tamil Nadu and has completed 3 level of Prarambhik, Praveshika pratham, Praveshika Purna, theoritical exams on dance. She is the recipient of the Bala Natya Mayuri Award, Natya Mayuri award, Ojaswi Award and the Nritya Kala Alankar Awards. She is presently a 7th grade student in Dr.K.K.R.Gowtham's School, HYDERABAD.

Anjana Ramesh
Anjana Ramesh is a Disciple of Smt. Kirti Ramgopal and undergoing training in the Karanas under Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. Anjana Ramesh is a ‘B’ Grade artist of Doordarshan, recipient of the CCRT Senior Scholarship, Ministry of Culture and Karnataka Govt. Scholarship and has also completed Masters in Fine Arts, Bharatnatyam from SASTRA University. Anjana Ramesh is a Topper of the Vidwat Grade Examination in Bharatanatyam, conducted by the Karnataka Secondary Education Board (KSEEB), she is an Internationally certified Yoga Instructor under the Sivananda School of Yoga. Anjana Ramesh has performed at the prestigious Spirit of Youth Festival – Madras Music Academy, Chennai.
BHARATANATYAM
Bharatanatyam is one of the 8 classical dance forms of India. Originally from Tamil Nadu, it is now practiced throughout the world and is a popular genre in many Indian Dande Festivals. The Bharatanatyam dancer is accompanied with the Nattuvangam, Violin, Mridangam and the Flute along with the Vocal rendition during a Bharatanatyam performance. Originally performed mainly in temple dance, this Indian dance form has now spread across languages, genres, religion and boundaries.
A regular Bharatanatyam repertoire consists of an Alarippu, Jathiswaram, Sabdam, Varnam, Padam and a Thillana.
