Fostering Resilience and Health in Food Systems
Critical drought conditions and extreme climate fluctuations are seriously threatening food systems in many regions, hindering the livelihoods and health of farmers, farmworkers and rural communities in the U.S. and internationally. This forum identifies strategies and practices that foster resilient and healthy food systems, by enabling vulnerable farmers, farmworkers, and communities to build buffers against drought, plan for climate change and implement more sustainable approaches.

This lecture takes a look at the last 30 years of reform in China in both a global, comparative perspective and a Chinese historical one. Indeed, the two perspectives often become inseparable as the particular combination of Chinese historical developments (often generated from international models such as the Soviet or Japanese one) create conditions for unprecedented developments. In particular I explore the long-term role
of the cultural nexus of power in creating an entrepreneurial local culture as well as long-term patterns of state-society relations. Additionally, I argue that the revolutionary model of development often produced unexpected connections with the cultural nexus to enable and nourish local enterprise.
We’ll take a break from dissecting the 2014 results and look ahead to the national possibilities for the 2016 election.
