Sarah Frier : No Filter -- The Inside Story of Instagram. Into the Impossible Ep. 51
Sarah Frier is a prolific technology reporter for Bloomberg. Her new book, “No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram,” is both a compelling account of Instagram’s history and a record of the social media platform’s impact on society.
Professor Brian Keating’s interview with Frier covers a range of topics, including the inspiration to research and write the book, the role of augmented technology, and how social media will be changed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Topics we discussed: 00:07:13 The meanings behind the title and cover of “No Filter.” 00:14:03 Social media moguls as humans and not just characters in the story. 00:21:41 How to tell a story when everyone knows the ending. 00:30:27 Anyone can be an Instagram celebrity. 00:40:31 Will a new platform emerge during the pandemic? 00:47:36 Technological advances keep Instagram relevant. 00:52:57 Questions INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE asks all authors.
Sarah Frier is a technology reporter for Bloomberg News and Businessweek. She earned a journalism degree from the University of North Carolina. Her articles on social media have won awards from The San Francisco Press Club and other organizations.

Previously on Thirty Minute Thesis I've explored alternatives to string theory, such as Loop Quantum Gravity. But I realized I hadn't yet explored the basics of string theory itself. So in today's video I ask: "What would It take for String Theory to move beyond the realm of pure math, Into verifiable territory"? Is the fact that many 'discoveries' in string theory revolve around the math of theory itself or already disproven facts about our universe -- such as the fact that AdS/CFT correspondence relies on a negative cosmological constant, in contrast to the observed positive cosmological constant -- already fatal to this once-most-promising of all theories? Or could it be salvaged and, if so, how? Do we need new predictions, or would even a retrodiction suffice?
This episode of Thirty Minute Thesis explores the experimental minimum -- the very basics that any purported theory of everything should aspire to achieve. We discuss the basics of the theory as delightfully explicated by Ed Witten in Physics Today and compare it to other approaches, such as Loop Quantum Gravity and more.
Welcome to another episode of Thirty Minute Thesis -- a solo deep-dive into a fascinating topic in cosmology, physics, or science itself. Today's video explains what String Theory must do in order to prevail as a candidate Theory of Everything.

A Conversation with Michael Shermer and Brian Keating Part 1: How it All Began: Cosmic Inflation, the Multiverse, and the Nature of Scientific Proof
In this episode, Shermer and Keating discuss:
cosmology and Intelligent Design,
the fine-tuning of the universe,
the multiverse and theism: many worlds or one God?
How does the Intelligent Designer or God as a disembodied mind interact with the physical universe?
If the origin of the universe and its fine-tuned nature points to an intelligence or mind behind it, why don’t most cosmologists, physicists, and astronomers accept that conclusion?
What are laws of nature?
Can you explain the origin of the universe by laws and rules of things in the universe?
What came before the Big Bang?
What caused the bang that gave rise to our universe?
Why there is something rather than nothing?
inflationary cosmology,
What is gravity? What is quantum gravity?
How did the Big Bang theory win out over the Steady State theory?
the difference between Popperian falsification, Kuhnian paradigm, and consensus science,
Is string theory physics, metaphysics, or mathematics?
What shape is the universe? Open, closed, or flat?
What is dark energy and dark matter?
What is time?
What is infinity?
cyclic universes and the multiverse.

For Earth Day 2021, we present a discussion of the comprehensive guide to surviving climate change and global warming, an existential issue of our time, from New York Times bestselling self-help author and beloved CBS Sunday Morning science and technology correspondent David Pogue.
You might not realize it, but we’re already living through the beginnings of climate chaos. In Arizona, laborers now start their day at 3 a.m. because it’s too hot to work past noon. Chinese investors are snapping up real estate in Canada. Millennials have evacuation plans. Moguls are building bunkers. Retirees in Miami are moving inland.
In How to Prepare for Climate Change, bestselling self-help author David Pogue offers sensible, deeply researched advice for how the rest of us should start to ready ourselves for the years ahead. Pogue walks readers through what to grow, what to eat, how to build, how to insure, where to invest, how to prepare your children and pets, and even where to consider relocating when the time comes. (Two areas of the country, in particular, have the requisite cool temperatures, good hospitals, reliable access to water, and resilient infrastructure to serve as climate havens in the years ahead.) He also provides wise tips for managing your anxiety, as well as action plans for riding out every climate catastrophe, from superstorms and wildfires to ticks and epidemics.
Timely and enlightening, How to Prepare for Climate Change is an indispensable guide for anyone who read The Uninhabitable Earth or The Sixth Extinction and wants to know how to make smart choices for the upheaval ahead.
