I grew up in a rough neighborhood with gangs, shoot outs, drugs, and outward prostitution. Can you imagine the trauma? I grew up angry. I was depressed often. I grew up learning to trust no one. I grew up thinking everyone was out to do me wrong or to hurt me. At the age of 13, I took my ass to a church group. I was the youngest in this group. Mostly adults. And it was the first time I felt safe enough to allow the emotion of love to fill me. Before that, I had convinced myself that I was broken because I was so hurt inside that I couldn’t feel a thing but rage and frustration.
