Here's my F250 right after finishing the buffing and polishing of the fresh Tamco Torch Red paint. The clear is Hi-Impact.

I was invited by the Rustic Rollers to bring the Monster Hauler to a local Cars & Coffee in Turlock, Ca. The once a year show is pretty eclectic, from Lamborghini's to low buck trucks like mine. One of, if not the nicest little cars show I've had the pleasure of attending.

The Canned Monster is a 1956 Ford Customline gasser project and features a custom built high compression Y-Block engine built by the Y-Block Guy. The car has a top loader four speed and a 8.75" Mopar rear with spool and 4:11 gears. The rear has been moved forward nine inches making in an altered wheel base race car. The car is being built to run at the Eagle Field Runway Drags in Dos Palos, California. The car is a nod to the 1960's drag cars and was heavily influenced by the Two Lane Blacktop '55 Chevy which became the '55 Chevy in American Graffiti.

Hot Rod ‘32...
Not all hot rods have flat paint or flatty mills. Show me a gloss black Deuce five-window, louvered on both ends, buggy sprung axles, bigs’n’littles, a driver...and you have shown me a hot rod.
According to Darryl Spurlock, he’s been cursed since he was about 11 years old. Seems his sister was seeing a hot rodder, and then that was compounded with a couple of close encounters with the likes of Garlits and Barris. His apparent curse would be that of Hot Rodding. Now that’s a cross that we all are happy to bear.
Darryl still owns his first car, a ’29 RPU, and a couple of others. But the car in question today is this smooth little Deuce five-window that he’s had for the last five years. This is one he bought rough after it traveled half way across the country and back. Apparently, it wanted to belong to him.
His first order of business after capturing this little gem was to make it right. Starting with a 3” chop and replacing the firewall, performed by Kenny Welch.
The interior was in disarray and full of buckets, among other non-period pieces. Daryl made sure that the interior got right. In place of the buckets, a bench seat now resides and the dash is full of Mooneyes gauges. A sprint car wheel is used to guide it and a swan neck is used to change the gears.
There are some non-period amenities, if you will allow, that being in the line of a Dan Soi installed stereo. It went back to Kenny again for an A/C unit. Face it. Not all rods are bare bones.
Under the louvered hood rests a small block Chebby. The SBC has been pretty popular since its inception and this one is not one of those buy-it-in-a-box-and-slap-it-in models. This one sports a whopping 383 cubes, built by Smeding Performance.
The coupe is buggy sprung on both ends, a 9” Ford (just like the ones in ’57) stuffed with a posi accommodates the rear spring, and a good ol’ dropped ‘n’ drilled axle is out front. All four binders are drums, the fronts are Buick pieces and the rears came from Ford.
Something must have been done right with the springs, or maybe it’s the tire combination. Whatever the culprit is, this little coupe has the perfect stance. Perhaps it’s a combination of all of the above.
Add mile-deep black paint job and a few pinstripes, accent the louvers on both ends in orange also, and all you have left to make it traditional is to drive it. Guess you can say that it’s a driver: Darryl has logged some 45,000 miles over the last few years. Include several trips to B-Ville, and one might say that this is not your average hot dog stand cruiser.
Like it was said: not all hot rods have flat paint and flatty mills….

I sat down with my buddy Matt and he gave me a very detailed breakdown of his model A coupe build. We also took it cruising around Modesto and even made it out to Paradise Road. The real one from American Graffiti. That film has greatly influenced both of our lives growing up around Modesto and having a profound car addiction. Come along for a great story about cars, and family and just getting your hands dirty. #hotrod #cars #family
