The Sad and Embarrassing Failure of Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop

On December 9th, The Hollywood Reporter broke the exclusive scoop that Netflix “Cowboy Bebop” had been cancelled, a mere three weeks since the show’s debut.
The rest of the trades soon picked up on the story, and from there, the embarrassingly premature and early cancellation of Cowboy Bebop was picked up by every website, blog and Youtube channel covering the entertainment industry. Usually, shows are cancelled with little fanfare, as news like that are normally swept under the rug – but this got almost more attention that the shows initial announcement, which is unusual; and adding insult to injury, fan reactions to the cancellation generally ranged from indifference to outright schadenfreude.
We’ll explore all of that in this editorial, as we go through how this could have gone so wrong, the responses to the cancellation, and finally, what lessons should be taken from this.

On August 4th, Patrick Stewart announced he would reprise his signature of Jean Luc Picard, to universal praise. The enthusiasm for the future Picard series if anything greater than the enthusiasm for the second season of “Star Trek Discovery”, despite the promise that it will feature both the Enterprise, Captain Pike and a young Spock.

On November 17th, Justice League opened to underwhelming reviews and boxoffice, a disappointment for DC Extended Universe.
That is not the only Cinematic Universe in peril though, as on November 8th, the plug was pulled on the current iteration of Universal’s Dark Universe, the cinematic universe consisting of the classic Universal Monsters like Frankenstein and Dracula, which begun (and ended) with «The Mummy».
