Dogs: Unexpected Stories, Superstitions, and Funny Things About Man’s Best Friend Dogs have been shown to improve autistic children’s quality of life, independence, and safety. The presence of a trained dog can reduce aggressive behavior, calm the child, and serve as a link to the child’s community. The shape of a dog’s face suggests how long it will live. Dogs with sharp, pointed faces that look more like wolves typically live longer. Dogs with very flat faces, such as bulldogs, often have shorter lives. Dogs were also used to cure other illnesses; one old charm which was often used for children's' illnesses was to take some of the patient's hairs and feed them to a dog in-between slices of bread and butter; the ailment was believed to transfer to the animal, healing the patient. The reason cats and dogs like to sunbath because the UV radiation from sun breaks down the chemical bonds in their natural oil, producing vitamin D. However, due to their fur, the vitamin would just end up on their hair and doesn’t get absorbed by the skin. When they lick their body to clean or groom themselves, that is the time they ingest Vitamin D. Vitamin D gets into their system via the oral route. When a dog howls in an otherwise silent night, it is said to be an omen of death, or at least of misfortune. A howling dog outside the house of a sick person was once thought to be an omen that they would die, especially if the dog was driven away and returned to howl again. A dog which gives a single howl, or three howls, and then falls silent is said to be marking a death that has just occurred nearby. French poodles did not originate in France but from Germany (“poodle” comes from the German pudel or pudelhund, meaning “splashing dog”). Poodles were originally used as hunting dogs in Europe. The dogs' thick coats were a hindrance in water and thick brush, so hunters sheared the hindquarters, with cuffs left around the ankles and hips to protect against rheumatism. While it's true that the beautiful song of a bird is often seen as a sign of good fortune, indigenous tribes used to think there was a dark secret behind their songs. Many cultures say that birds are actually the souls of the dead, who fly among the living. For example, in Peru there is a legend about the Urutaú, a strange bird with a slightly frightening appearance, big mouth and a song that sounds like the cry of a soul in pain. This is why witches do not like cattle.... How would you scare a witch away? Some would suggest garlic, others would say salt or even scissors (anyone would be afraid of someone with scissors in their hand!) However, witches don't seem to like cows, pigs or livestock in general very much... Since in the old days livestock was much more important to life in general, it's no surprise that witches wanted to attack people where it hurted the most. Fortunately some Irish and Scottish farmers found the witches' weak spot, to keep them away from their livestock, they usually hung flowers that were considered witch-proof, such as primulas or wands made from Rowan tree. Magic chameleon dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) Pink unicorns don't exist (or any color), but believe it or not pink dolphins are real. These endangered aquatic mammals are found in the Amazon basin, between the waters of the Orinoco River and the Amazon River. But their color is not the only strange thing about this species... Some legends tell that these dolphins were once human, and their pink color serves to attract people's attention. It is said that they can adopt the appearance of a handsome human wearing a straw hat, all with the aim of kidnapping children and seducing women, dancing with them and inviting them into the water to transform them or to impregnate them. And no, we're not talking about komodo dragons, but dragons that went from being the size of buildings, to being as small as a flash drive. A Native American myth suggests that dragonflies were originally dragons. But one day, a coyote convinced them to change their shape, and when they tried to return to their original form, it was impossible. And bites are not the only way an insect can harm you... Who wins between a hedgehog and a cow? Do you know what a cow's worst enemy is? According to some farmers, their worst nightmare can be a simple little hedgehog. Imagine for a moment being a cow on a farm. You're a little tired from all that walking and after a good feasting on grass. You decide to take a little nap, and suddenly oh surprise! You no longer have milk to feed your young... Did someone milk her while she was sleeping? The eagles are watching us and the indigenous people always knew it... The gods watch over us and sometimes like to disguise themselves as birds. According to many Native American traditions, eagles are actually a form of the creator of the earth, who is at all times watching what is going on. It is also said that the feathers of an eagle possess special powers, and cannot be touched by just anyone. The feathers must be collected by an eligible Native American, and a feast is held after the feather is found. The world is filled with mystery, amazing animals once thought to be gone forever, miraculously came back to life and survived from extinction while others where immortalized in mythology as beasts that were never real, or were they? Let’s travel the world in search of the rarest Lazarus species of animals once declared extinct but survived to be rediscovered. Tasmanian Tiger The largest carnivorous marsupial in the world was discovered in the Australian islands more specifically, Tasmania. In the early 1900s the government of Australia paid farmers for the carcasses of the detrimental animal. Farmers blamed the Tasmanian tiger for the loss of their farm animals and the execution of the marsupial was the unfortunate “best” option for economic growth. But not all was lost. Less than a year ago, a local resident of Clifton Springs near Victoria Florida Panther by the late 70’s habitat destruction and fear of panther attacks took over the inhabitants of the everglades and the Florida panther was nearly exited. The population was critically reduced to less than 20 individuals in the wild. After many years of hard work educating the public, as well as habitat rehabilitation and conservation, in 2013 the population has grown to 160. Tiny Primates! Pygmy tarsier Saber-Tooth Tiger Few years ago, a well-preserved saber-toothed tiger cub was found. It’s body, finally free from its frozen captivity where it remained trapped for thousands and thousands of years, not only helped scientist learn a bit more about their development and size but, within it, there was a lot more information. Its DNA found in the frozen lands of Siberia, uncovered an entire DNA sample with enough data to bring the saber tooth back to life. California Condor In the 60 a devastating incident reduced the declining population of about 53 condors to 4… A brush fire was started by a party truck owned by Johnny cash. It burned 100s or acres of mountains and forest… pretty much the entire las casitas national forest. In the late 80’s the condor was finally extinct in the wild. The last remaining wild condors where captured and taken into a breeding program. About 5 years later, the California condor was reintroduced back into its natural habitat and even released in several US states. It’s a slow road back into recovery due to slow reproductive cycles and human habitat destruction.
