Today I review the CAD Equitek E100s, a super-cardioid condenser studio microphone. This mic has a crazy low self noise at 3.7dBA, and a max SPL of 150dB. It offers a warm, smooth, and detailed tone that I think works well for voice, acoustic instruments, and clean electric guitar.
NOTE (FULL DISCLOSURE): If you purchase an item using my amazon link, it provides me a small referral fee. For more info check my FAQ page links below.
Today I review the AT8035, a 14.5” line + gradient condenser microphone. The microphone works well for voice over and for booming at a few feet. This mic has a bit of a bright tone, but still offers a fairly accurate representation of the sound that you’re putting into it. If you don’t have room for a mic as long as the 8035, the AT875r is a great alternative.

Today I review the SMM-205, a super cheap budget microphone. This thing costs under $10 and can plug directly into your computers mic input, or a portable recorder, or an audio interface. But is this thing even worth the $8 that it costs? Can it be used for gaming, youtube, or interviews? I don't think so.

Today we record a podcast to tape / cassette. Is this something you should do? No. But it’s a fun experiment to run. For this experiment I record using the Tascam Ministudio Porta 02, a “vintage” home studio 4-track recorder. The full signal chain is: SM7b through the fethead, into the Rupert Neve Portico 5017, into the Yamaha MG10XU, and then into the Porta02.

Today i review the sE Electronics sE7, a small diaphragm condenser which offers a nice low end, neutral mids and a lifted top end which gives you some liveliness but it's not overdone. Like most SDCs it doesn't do great with plosives, but does pretty well with off axis coloration. I also think this mic can exagerate a little bit of sibilance.

Today I review the Shure SM48-LC, a budget version of the SM58 that comes in under $40. The "LC" in the name means "Less Cable", so it doesn't come with an XLR cable. This is an XLR microphone with a roll off of bass frequencies below 200Hz, and a large presence and treble boost, and a roll off of the majority of air frequencies. For the price, it’s a great entry level or budget vocal microphone.
