When data has many repeated scores the usual method of calculating the mean can be imprecise and not fall at the exact 50% mark, as demonstrated here. To solve this we need to calculate a more precise interpolated median.

In this video I describe how social support can help people to manage stress. This may come in the form of tangible support, informational support, or emotional support, though not all social interactions are beneficial for managing stress. I also describe how groups can provide social capital, though they also run the risk of becoming overly isolated or hostile to outsiders. Social support likely plays a role in the faith factor, which refers to individuals with higher levels of religiosity or spirituality having better health outcomes and living longer.

In this video I describe 4 characteristics of human consciousness. These include unity, intentionality, selectivity, and transience. The selectivity of our consciousness and our ability to filter out perceptions which are deemed irrelevant can be demonstrated in the Cocktail Party Phenomenon, dichotic listening tasks, and selective attention tasks involving change blindness and inattentional blindness.

In this video I explain the idea of misattribution of arousal; when people misinterpret their physiological arousal, which may cause them to mislabel their emotional experience. I explain how this was demonstrated in Schachter & Singer's study (discussed in the previous video) as well as in Stuart Valin's study of false heart-beat feedback. The most famous example of misattribution of arousal comes from Donald Dutton and Arthur Aron's study of male responses to a female interviewer differing whether they met her on the Capilano suspension bridge or on solid ground.

In this video we take a basic look at how to understand the role of genes on personality and how evolution may shape traits and select for a range of variance in a trait rather than extremes.

In this video I describe two theories of motivation; the concept of instincts and drive theory. Instincts referred to inherited tendencies that were considered to motivate behavior without any prior experience. Later, drive theory proposed that departures from an optimal state motivated behaviors that would return the organism to that optimal state.

In this video I describe traits and techniques associated with coping with stressors. Susanne Kobasa identified commitment, challenge, and control as important factors in understanding hardiness and people who were able to thrive in stressful circumstances. Resilience in the face of adversity also relates to post-traumatic growth, in which people feel that they have been strengthened as a result of grappling with a stressful situation. I also describe three techniques for increasing hardiness: reappraisal, focusing, and compensatory self-improvement.
