Michigan drops recommendation for masks in schools. other indoor settings
Michigan health department leaders are no longer urging local school leaders and others to require masks in many indoor settings. The new guidance takes effect immediately. reflecting improving COVID 19 trends and similar moves from other administrations across the country amid fierce pressure from critics who argue that mask recommendations at schools are unnecessary. 'While Michigan hasn't had statewide mask policies since last June. this updated guidance will underscore that we are getting back to normal.' Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a news release. 'Let's keep working together to build on our momentum so we can keep our kids learning in person.” The guidance does not immediately nullify any local orders. Detroit schools still have a mask requirement. although most local districts have announced plans to roll back their remaining regulations by the end of the month. The state still recommends everyone wear masks in long term care facilities. prisons. hospitals and similar sites. COVID 19 case rates and hospitalizations are down substantially in recent weeks. while death rates have largely stabilized. Michigan has not required indoor masking for months. but Whitmer and the Department of Health and Human Services called on local school districts and health departments all fall to require masking for students. Some in communities that followed this recommendation thanked local officials for instituting mask requirements as pandemic trends worsened. but others pushed back. Some school districts leveled accusations of doctors issuing improper mask waivers. while some parents blasted at times changing quarantine guidance while questioning the necessity to mask. Health and science experts generally agree masking helps prevent the spread of COVID 19. It's not foolproof. and must be done in conjunction with other mitigation efforts. but evidence suggests high quality masks can prevent pandemic surges. According to data released last fall from the University of Michigan and the state health department. Michigan students who attended K 12 schools with mask requirements in August and September had lower rates of coronavirus transmission than those at schools without mandates. But rates at districts with mask rules started to mirror those without by late 2021. The state suggested masking still worked but the effect may be negated by spread in other settings where masks are not required. Studies from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention generally echoed the state's findings. Despite children typically not suffering the same severe effects from COVID 19 as elderly people or vulnerable adults. more Michigan children were hospitalized with pandemic related symptoms in

A pastor baptized people for decades using one wrong word. Now those are all considered invalid
(CNN)A priest has resigned after a church investigation found he performed invalid baptisms throughout most of his more than 20 year career. according to Bishop Thomas Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix. Father Andres Arango. who performed thousands of baptisms. would say. 'We baptize you in the name of the Father. and of the Son. and of the Holy Spirit.' But Olmsted explained the words 'We baptize' should have been 'I baptize' instead. 'The issue with using 'We' is that it is not the community that baptizes a person. rather. it is Christ. and Him alone. who presides at all of the sacraments. and so it is Christ Jesus who baptizes.' Olmsted wrote in a message to parishioners posted last month. The error also means that because baptism is the first of the sacraments. some people will need to repeat other sacraments. according to the diocese webpage for frequently asked questions. CNN has reached out to the diocese for comment on other sacraments. 'It saddens me to learn that I have performed invalid baptisms throughout my ministry as a priest by regularly using an incorrect formula. I deeply regret my error and how this has affected numerous people in your parish and elsewhere.' Arango wrote in his own message on the site. Olmsted said the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2020 affirmed that when a baptism is conferred with the formula 'We baptize ...' it...

Hillary Clinton sidesteps Cuomo. hits out at Fox News and GOP lies in New York speech
(CNN)Four years ago. Hillary Clinton was greeted with a bouquet by then Gov. Andrew Cuomo when she endorsed him at the New York State Democratic Party convention. But a lot has changed since then and. on Thursday. as she introduced Cuomo's successor. Gov. Kathy Hochul. at the same event. Clinton. like her fellow state Democratic leaders. never mentioned his name even as the possibility of him attempting a political comeback looms over the party's immediate future. 'She is a governor for all of us.' Clinton said of Hochul. who ascended to the governorship last August after Cuomo resigned over a series of sexual harassment allegations and a damaging report from the state attorney general's office. 'And by the way. isn't it about time that the state that gave birth to the women's suffrage movement. the state that has always been at the forefront of progress and reform. isn't it about time we elected a woman as our governor?' As the convention in midtown Manhattan voted to endorse Hochul shortly before Clinton spoke. news began to spread that a New York judge had ruled that former President Donald Trump. and his children Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr.. must sit for depositions in the state attorney general's civil investigation of their business practices. The family had been pushing back on subpoenas from New York Attorney General Letitia James. who was cheered at the convention despite repeated attacks on her by Cuomo allies. who have for months accused her of running a biased investigation into the harassment accusations that ultimately led to his downfall. In 2018. Clinton. at the state party convention. showered praise on Cuomo. who was facing a primary challenge at the time from Cynthia Nixon. while never mentioning Trump by name. This time around. the script was flipped. Cuomo's name and the circumstances that led to Hochul's ascent were left out of the script. But Trump and his allies were firmly in the former secretary of state's crosshairs. After warning Democrats not to get distracted by 'the latest culture war nonsense' ahead of the coming midterm elections. Clinton drew a connection between Trump's legal troubles and Fox News' coverage of her. 'So now his accountants have fired him and investigations draw closer to him and right on cue. the noise machine gets turned up.' she said. 'Fox leads the charge with accusations against me. counting on their audience to fall for it again. And as an aside. they're getting awfully close to actual malice.' The invocation of 'actual malice.' which is the legal standard required to prove a libel case in court. was a particularly pointed note and a clear warning to Fox News leadership. Clinton's speech began with

Trump unloads on Hillary Clinton. Letitia James after NY Democratic convention
Former President Donald Trump slammed Hillary Clinton and New York state Attorney Letitia James in a lengthy statement Thursday — hours after the Democrats unloaded on him at a state party convention. Trump used his familiar insult of “Crooked Hillary Clinton” to accuse the former senator and secretary of state of spying on him as a candidate. then added that “the now totally discredited Fake News Media does everything they can not to talk about it.” Clinton had lashed out at Trump during comments made in Times Square for state Democrats’ nominating convention as she faces scrutiny for a court filing by special counsel John Durham that accused her 2016 presidential campaign of paying for research to link Trump — then a GOP candidate running against Clinton — to Russia. “They’ve been coming after me again.” Clinton said at the convention earlier in the day. “It’s fine. the more trouble Trump gets into. the wilder the charges and conspiracy theories about me seem to get. so now his accountants have fired him and investigations draw closer to him.” Clinton said. Also Thursday. a Manhattan judge ruled that the ex president and his children Ivanka and Donald Jr. would have to testify as part of James’ probe into the Trump Organization’s business dealings. James. who dropped a short lived run for governor and is seeking re election as AG. said at the convention she wouldn’t be “bullied” by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo or Trump. Trump responded in his statement and exclaimed. “THERE IS NO CASE.” “On the other hand. failed Gubernatorial candidate. Letitia James. can run for the office of AG on saying absolutely horrendous and false things about Donald Trump. a man she doesn’t know and has never met. go on to get elected. and then selectively prosecute him and his family.” Trump said. accusing James of trying “to interfere with my business relationships. and with the political process.” The former president said prosecutors. “after viewing millions of pages of documents over many years.” came up with a fringe benefits case on a car. an apartment and grandchildren’s education. “With the rest of the case. even Cy Vance. who just left the DA’s office without prosecuting anything additional. because there isn’t anything additional to prosecute — THERE IS NO CASE!” he railed. “The targeting of a President of the United States. who got more votes while in office than any President in History. by far. and is a person that the Radical Left Democrats don’t want to run again. represents an unconstitutional attack on our Country — and the people will not allow this travesty of justice to happen.” Trump went on. “I

California to debate mandating Covid vaccines at all workplaces
Assemblymember Buffy Wicks is introducing the new bill. the fourth piece of legislation to come out of the newly formed “vaccine caucus.” | Rich Pedroncelli/AP Photo By Victoria Colliver and Jeremy B. White 02/11/2022 09:01 AM EST Updated: 02/11/2022 11:50 AM EST California would be the first state to impose Covid 19 vaccine mandates at all workplaces under sweeping new legislation to be unveiled Friday. The bill from Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D Oakland) comes as Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to release a statewide pandemic exit strategy signaling the transition to an “endemic” phase of the public health crisis. “The pathway to endemic. for us to get back to some sense of normalcy. is through vaccines.” Wicks told POLITICO in an exclusive interview. Wicks floated a similar proposal last year but didn’t introduce it. Wicks is acting after the U.S. Supreme Court nullified the Biden administration’s employer vaccine mandate — a decision that. she said. opened the door for state lawmakers to take the lead on the issue. Assembly Bill 1993. which would likely take effect next year and levy penalties on employers that don’t comply. is likely to draw criticism from mandate foes — especially as infection and hospitalization rates driven by the Omicron variant continue to plummet. But Wicks argues that the unpredictability of the virus makes the case for the...
