The simplest of social skills prefer more important than new people in technology realize. Showing up on time for appointments is not simply a nicety, but rather a vital skill. Punctuality will help or hinder your tech career in ways that you may not even realize.
The days of making a lot of money just by earning a certification are over. To be successful TODAY you must find new and innovative solutions that provide real value to your clients. Thinking outside of the box is no longer a mental exercise. It has become a necessary part of staying relevant as a technologist.
Everything has a cost...
It is innate human reaction to always try to maintain the status quo. The brain prefers to fall into prerecorded routines so that it can save energy. Real thinking is kept to a minimum as a survival mechanism even in an age when for $1 you can buy a 2000 calories bag of chips on almost any street corner.
When confronted with loss and change it is easiest and feels best to try to get back what you have lost, but the reality is that everything you have comes at a cost. At some point you made the decision to pay that price, but the correctness of that past decision may no longer be appropriate.
