Topic: While the world’s space agencies extend humanity’s reach into space with science satellites of all kinds, generations of scientists have carried out cutting-edge research from high in the Earth’s atmosphere using balloons and extensively modified jet aircraft.
The most sophisticated of these latter observatories is the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a 747 now in its second year of astronomical research. It’s program of discoveries is just beginning!
Join Tony Darnell, Alberto Conti, and Harley Thronson as they discuss with Bill Reach and Tom Roellig, both of NASA Ames Research Center, the challenges and excitement of astronomy with SOFIA.
These hangouts are in affiliation with the American Astronomical Society and the American Astronautical Society.

The search for planets around other stars is heating up. So far, there are over 4,000 confirmed exoplanets. What would the Earth look like in one of these searches?

The Large Synoptic Sky Survey is one of the most ambitious ground-based astronomy surveys ever conceived. The 8.4 meter special three mirror design will provide extremely large field of view for imaging the entire sky every few days. The survey will last 10 years and deliver a 200 petabyte set of images and data products that will address some of the most pressing questions about the structure and evolution of the universe and the objects in it.
Please join Tony Darnell and Christian Ready as they discuss this exciting project with Frossie Economou and Dr. Yusra AlSayyad of the LSST Consortium and get the latest info on this amazing project!

In this episode, the European Space Agency revealed earlier this month that the upcoming CHEOPS mission designed to study the structure of exoplanets smaller than Saturn has completed spacecraft testing and passed an important review. What is CHEOPS and what will it do?

Tonight just after sunset promises to be quite exciting in the northern hemisphere. The International Space Station begins its overhead track, the planet Mercury peeks out low in the west, and the planets Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn follow a path across the sky known as the ecliptic.

Astronomers using Hubble Space Telescope data have new observations of a candidate exomoon associated with Kepler-1625b. If confirmed, this exomoon would be quite large, with a mass and radius similar to Neptune. The exoplanet Kepler-1625b is itself quite large, a planet initially estimated to be several Jupiter masses.
Please join Tony Darnell, Carol Christian, Alex Teachey and David Kipping as they discuss these new observations and what they tell us about this new exomoon.

New NASA research indicates that Saturn’s iconic rings are not only younger than previously thought, but also that these rings are actually disappearing. The research found that the rings are draining away toward the planet as a dusty rain of ice particles.
