Seollal (Lunar New Year) is a festival and national holiday commemorating the first day of the lunisolar year in Korea . The celebration usually lasts three days.
Traditional markets are an excellent place for people to buy traditional foods typically eaten on this holiday. Jeon are the most popular food made on this holiday. Jeon are assorted foods egg battered and fried. My favorite is a meatball version called 동그랑땡 (circle thing). But you’ll see vegetables and even fish made into jeon.
Rice cakes are a must have on Korean holidays. So many versions are made fresh and sold on Seollal. Some resemble coins and are eaten for good fortune. Tongin market, where we went, is known for a tteokbokki that isn’t sweet and has two versions, a spicy and a soy version.
Traditional markets are amazing places to find fresh, authentic and all the specialty foods in any country.
